Some food for thought amid the "cries for gun control" to make our school safe.

A good idea, especially considering the physical assaults on teachers by our urban yutes.

"Sit down or I'll put a cap in yo' ass" sounds more effective than sending them to the principal's office.

I generally don’t have a high opinion of public school teachers, but I’d be surprised if any of them would have stood by like those deputies if a shooting was occurring. I’d think they’d have more attachment to the children, or at least a sense of self-preservation. I guess the deputies just didn’t have their own children in that school...

“I’d be surprised if any of them would have stood by like those deputies if a shooting was occurring. “

The pychological bond between students and a staff member - call it whatever you wish - tends to compel that person to react when the student is endangered. This is simiar to the bond between soldiers in combat or even teamates in violent sports.

This is a fundamental difference between responding police and teachers in that school.

It doesn’t explain the cowardly behavior of Dpty. Peterson however.

An even better idea is to allow people to arm themselves.

Doesn’t cost the gov a cent.

It takes training and discipline to continue the attack when under fire. I believe this perp would have taken off running as soon as the first shot from anybody (armed teacher or police) was directed at him.

We had an awesome school in the 1950's. Every classroom on the first floor had an exit only steel door. Every kid could get out in moments.

The second floor had the same setup....with fire escapes.

Schools need to be redesigned. No one should be trapped.

EXACTLY..... my daughter is a kindergarten teacher and she is very attached to her students. She works very hard to be sure they are successful and don’t get targeted for programs she can’t control. Her students LOVE her and tell her so daily.

Arming theoretical teachers is, in theory, not a good idea but a VERY good idea.

Arming our actually existing teachers, however - that's quite a different matter.

If I remember correctly, some years back the Israelis had a similar problem; Muslims would attack a school and shoot the little kids.

The Israeli government then armed the teachers. Attacks dropped to zero almost overnight.

If you have such a low opinion on them why would you want to depend on them to arm themselves and protect your kids?

Most teachers have either already killed their own children in the womb, or vehemently fight tooth and nail to make sure others can do the same with impunity. Clearly there is a gross disregard for the most innocent among us.

And people think those same murderers are going to give a rat’s @$$ about the students?

Don’t allow the government enforced it, they would have to go through too many fire procedures before cleared.

I hope they won’t make the mistake of keeping the teacher’s guns locked in a safe. (Probably with a bio-metric access, is my guess.)

If the teachers are armed — and I endorse this — they should carry concealed on their person, and keep it a Top Secret. No matter WHERE they are, they’re Ready. If a safe is used, time will be lost — IF the damn thing is even in an accesable place, once the shooting starts!

If the defense weapon is kept in a safe Everybody will know THAT it exists, and WHERE it is. This reduces the deterrant effect of the unknown too much.

Not every teacher would qualify. (Says a lot right there about who these people are...)

Qualify and allow the sober and sane kids over some age to be determined to be armed. That’d put a stop to bullying, you betcha...

(Yeah, I know. Krazzy & never happen — can you IMAGINE the squealing this proposal would elicit?

We can’t expect teachers to function as Special Weapons and Tactics squads... that’s too much to ask.

But they should be armed.

If those teachers willing are trained and told the gun is primarily for defense - it’ll work. A killer opens the door and they can defend their students by shooting the guy. That’ll work as a deterrent - it takes way the miasma of ‘gun free zone’... puts killers on notice.

If Secretary of education Betsy DeVos would ever get off her obama and get the vouchers done, Christians schools like this pop up all over the country, even here in the People’s republic of New England.

An armed good guy may or may not save the day, but six unarmed adults at Sandy Hook didn’t do so well using their body’s to shield 20 students.
