Sheriff Scott Israel battling calls to resign as blame shifts in wake of FL high school shooting

Calls for the Broward sheriff to resign intensify. The vocal sheriff who has criticized everyone from local politicians to the NRA to one of his own officers in the wake of the Florida high school shooting is facing the pressure himself Monday, as calls mount for him to resign amid reports about his department’s alleged incompetence in stopping the gunman.

The heat against Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel is coming from all angles, including from a survivor of the attack who told Fox News that he “failed to act on so many different levels” and from dozens of state lawmakers who are urging Florida Gov. Rick Scott to suspend him.

“Listen, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, O.J. Simpson would still be in the record books,” was Israel's bizarre defense Sunday after being asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper if the shooting might not have happened if his department handled things differently.

The comment came following disputed reports that three of Israel’s officers refused to enter Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School as Nikolas Cruz was killing 17 people in the Valentine’s Day rampage.

A deputy in charge of protecting the school, Scot Peterson, resigned Thursday after it emerged he himself failed to go into the building, taking shelter behind a concrete column for four minutes as the 19-year-old gunned down anyone in his path. And the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, in addition to the FBI, is continuing to face questions Monday as to why they didn’t do more when multiple people sounded the alarm about the gunman’s erratic behavior.

Give the guy a break. He’s only responsible for hiring, training, and equipping his deputies. Just because they perform poorly at their jobs and make horrible decisions and countless mistakes is no reason for him to resign. After all, he’s the only competent person in the department and provides amazing leadership to his staff. /S!!!

Can’t fire him because he’s an elected official.

The policies that made the schools a soft target AND the policy of not reporting kids to the police is where this begins.

Right now, it looks like the school board is hiding until they get their "orders" from the Dems.

Nah, to quote Sheriff Israel himself, “Lions (like him) don’t care about the opinions of sheep (us).”

He’s a survivor, dontcha know. I give him less than two weeks before he leaves office and Florida.

I just found out today that Cruz actually called the cops on himself after his mother died and told them he was not in a good place right now. They did nothing!

FBI is also to blame! Leaked FBI document of informant phone call on Jan 5 shows it is unbelievable that a followup did not occur.

Well then, since it's impossible to fire this government hack, Israel is free to stay and pretend all is good. That ought to work out really well for Israel.☺

Cruz believes he demonstrates amazing leadership and gauges that on the number of kids he ignores rather than on the number they help.

Born in New York, Israel is the son of a New York homicide detective. He began his career as a patrol officer for the Fort Lauderdale police department in 1979, later working narcotics in the 1980s and 1990s, when crime was rampant. Israel has been the subject of 10 internal affairs complaints, mainly for excessive force, although he was cleared in all of them. He served a stint as a SWAT commander and was North Bay Village chief of police from 2004 to 2008, but left to run for sheriff in 2008 and 2012. Israel eventually won in 2012, and easily won re-election in 2016.

He's up for re-electon this year, hopefully the County GOP finds a good opponent.

The mistakes and repeated errors in judgement could fill the page. There was zero due diligence to protect Cruz from himself, his family or his school mates. He was a well known danger to society.

Why was Cruz able to get by with threatening, hitting, harassing and assaulting other people at home and at school?

Good the thing the Cruz is not black, we’d have BLM defending him and making him an innocent victim of society. “White man caused him to do it.”

Does anyone know if the union contract for their police requires them to do any actual protecting/serving on anything besides collecting their salaries, benefits, and pensions? http://bcpba.org/about-the-bcpba/
