Dick's CEO Edward Stack says the decision was a direct result of the high school shooting in Florida and the rallying cry from the kids at the school after witnessing the tragedy.
"We don’t want to be a part of this any longer," says Stack.

I went to Dick’s last December to do some Christmas shopping. Walked out of there with nothing. The store sucked.
This is the second time they “stopped” selling AR-15’s. They did it in 2013 and must not have had the same fanfare when they started again...

I just informed Dicks that: I and my family will NO LONGER bring my business to their stores. Additionally, I will encourage all friends & acquaintances to boycott their stores.

Plenty of places you can shop for gun's and outdoor equipment..on-line.
I've purchased many rifles and pistols on-line.
I never saw one on display at Dick's but there were many other rifles not on display either.
There's only so much display room.
I do know that some time ago a clerk told me you could special order one there.
Don't know if that policy changed before this announcement or not.
Check back with Dick’s in 6 mos and they will be selling them again.
Wrong they never sold assault rifles. They are just ending sales of rifles that look scary
