What happened is obvious. They cloned her hard drive, stealing her data and should have left the Original Hard Drive. Looks like someone got sloppy and returned it with the clone.
Later, when they realized it, said she will never figure it out.
But she is one savvy Journalist!

They might have wanted the original drive, as opposed to just making a copy of it, because non-thoroughly wiped disk space can sometimes be read using special techniques that I’ve read about but am not familiar with.

The better question to ask is why was it switched.
If there was not a nefarious purpose why would the drive be switched without explaining the reason at the time the computer was retrned?

If just mirroring, and retaining original for further investigation (such as undeleting files left by intruders) why not tell Sheryl.

For a long time I’ve thought it a basic rule of self-preservation that if a government agency confiscates your computer, phone or similar, [if] when they give it back then you don’t even switch on it but just get your lawyer to witness you putting it through a shredder. Maybe I’m just a cynic or something.
Please wake me when one of these “bombshells” actually results in a consequence or prosecution. That word may be the most wrongly overused word today. Every blogger uses it to try to get you to click on their stupid blog. Nothing ever comes of these “bombshells”.
The FIB is far from being cleaned up. And now, it seems, the IG is at least partially infested as well.

If the IG simply wanted all the info on the hard drive they could have just mirrored it. I would suspect the new hard drive they put in the computer is a mirror with some "very special" attributes.
