NRA files lawsuit over Florida gun control law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — UPDATE (6:15 p.m.):

The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.

Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect.

The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns.

The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

Because you could buy a rifle or shotgun at 18. Now that they’re all at 21, it is infringing on the right to bear arms.

Yep. They’re both for gun control. What’s the difference. If Scott will cave on this, what else will he cave on.

No, it was an amendment allowed to address the concern of black legislators that black students would be targeted. A.....total.....sham.....

Yes, if anything, Scott should have called it the piece of crap it was, vetoed it, and gave the legislature very specific instructions and if they overrode it, so be it. Actually, he should have called a special session just for this issue and let the emotion settle. Legislation based on emotion is always garbage. In this case, neither side liked it.

apparently you have to shoot a diversity of victims, so many from each race proportionate to that race’s percentage in the population

Because Scott screwed the pooch, why would that affect 2020 for Trump in FL? That’s ridiculous.

What states have a higher age limit than 21 for buying a rifle?

The GOP is so worthless. If they can’t even support gun rights, what good are they?

ZERO! We already knew this though with the election of DJT.

Exactly. We all knew the federal law makes it illegal for anyone under 21 to buy a handgun from a LICENSED distributor, but long rifles it was 18 y/o
Now FLA is saying NO ADULT 18-21 can own ANY gun.

We need just one damned age of “adulthood” and at that point your parents have every right to kick your ass out on the street and say, well buck-o you are an adult now go forth and put a roof over your own damned head!!!!

Well obviously a good parent will raise their kids so they are ready to move out before that age and are all self sufficient.

That age should also be voting age too.

I have two major issues with this. First, if you can vote and join the military at 18 (or be drafted) you should be able to drink and buy guns. Period. No questions asked. Period.

Secondly, I know plenty of 18-20 year olds (Hello US Marines) who I trust to handle weapons.

And I know of hundreds of thousands of 21 and older people who aren’t emotionally stable and mature enough to own weapons safely.

We call them Liberals.

The NRA is wrong here. States are sovereign outside expressed U.S. Constitutional limits (the 2nd amendment is pointed directly at the feds).

Florida is not constitutionally prohibited from passing this law, but I’m willing to bet the virtual tyrannical discretion given to the police violates the Florida State Constitution.

Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis is running for governor of Florida. He was just asked what he thought about the bill. He was against raising the age to 21. He said he thinks it’s unconsitutional and thinks the Supreme Court would overrule it. DeSantis would definitely be an improvement from wishy-washy Rick Scott,
