Thousands of pounds of human waste, close to 14,000 hypodermic needles cleaned out (Santa Ana River)

Thousands of pounds of human waste, close to 14,000 hypodermic needles cleaned out from Santa Ana River homeless encampments

Orange County Public Works released eye-popping figures Thursday, March 8, on the total amount of debris, needles and hazardous waste removed when crews cleaned up the area along the Santa Ana River Trail once populated by the encampments of homeless people.

Here’s what was collected between Jan. 22 and March 3 from a more than two-mile stretch of bike trail roughly from I-5 in Orange to Ball Road in Anaheim, according to OC Public Works spokesman Shannon Widor:

404 tons of debris

13,950 needles (approximate number based on what disposal containers hold)

5,279 pounds of hazardous waste (human waste, propane, pesticides and other materials)

Before and after photographs published by the Register last week show stark differences at different spots along the trail, as does a video the county posted Feb. 28 on YouTube.

More than 700 people were living in the encampments when they were dismantled in late February. Most of those people are being housed temporarily in local motels while county outreach workers assess their need for services and housing.

The bike trail cleanup is the beginning of an environmental remediation effort that was expected to include the removal of 2 to 3 inches of soil in the project area and tree trimming. Planned improvements on the bike trail from Katella to Ball Road/Taft Avenue also could include sealing cracks and applying a slurry seal, Widor said.

Its incredible when you consider the fact that those areas were pristinely sparkling clean the day Trump was elected

What part of TX did you move to? I pray you didn’t bring any libs with you :-)

The last large city still in Republican hands (for now anyway), Fort Worth. We make sure and tell our young leftist relatives how gawdaful hot and humid it is in the summer and about the dangerous tornados, lightning, hail, and ice storms the rest of the year. Hee hee.

I had one too, that's why I can imagine the horror.

He was forever finding coins, screws, etc.

We moved overseas a few times when he was little and one of the first sights we had was a guy shooting up in the park right across from the school he was going to attend. (which I was told was an odd sighting and I never did see it again). And on that same trip, different location in the city, I saw an old discarded needle in a bush.

I musta put the fear of god into those kids regarding needles, at least I hope.

Now we are hearing more about homeless, since Trump’s election, than we heard in the eight years of the Obama era.

I always wonder, why do liberal places, seem to have such major homeless problems???? Liberals pride themselves on being, well, liberal, compassionate, wanting to help people, etc. etc. Yet San Francisco, ground zero as perhaps the most liberal city in America, has some of the worst homeless problems. They have huge numbers of homeless, and also have some of the worst ancillary problems, such as urine and feces and open drug use found all over the city, not just in homeless camps.

My thoughts also. Moving these people
to various locations to try to hide
the problem, by reducing concentration.
We’re I a visitor looking to rent
a motel room, I’d want to know what
I’m being exposed to.

Good idea. Send that Oakland mayor out to clean up, too.

Had a very brief experience with food stamps when an evil former company saw how much paid vacation I'd accumulated and fired me so they could steal it. Of course, that wasn't their official excuse, but it was a big part of their reason. They also fought me on unemployment, so we immediately qualified for food stamps based on income despite having a substantial savings nest egg.

Long story short is that I beat them on the unemployment case but still couldn't get off food stamps unless I proved my ineligibility with documented income. Not long after Trump was elected, I got my first job interview, then another and another. Less than a month after he was sworn into office, I was working full time, so the unemployment went away with a simple on-line filing.

The food stamps were another matter. I could have just kept my mouth shut and I'd still be collecting them, but after getting my first paychecks and filing their forms, the EBT card load was still coming, so I called again.

They finally had to change my records from "not qualified for benefits" to "declined benefits" to get them stopped. I called back and offered to refund the month after I had started full time employment. The case worker thanked me for my honesty but told me not to even go there. It would cause them more complications and maybe make it difficult for me to ever get benefits in the future if I ever needed them. I kid you not.

I'm guessing that was her polite way of telling me I would be blackballed as a conservative.

But the liberal OC Weekly had an article a few months ago the the Ruverbed Homeless people were making the riverbed “a nice place to live”. How can this be????

Well as Gavin Newsome might say, the large homeless population in our state is “California quirky”.

My friend bought some land that was once used as a hog farm and holding pen. He needed to do the same.

Yeah it’s amazing. And there were zero homeless people during Obama’s two terms.

We don’t have that problem here. They’ll cut you off in a heartbeat and then collect whatever was overpaid. I have a friend who works in the collections department of our welfare department. That’s all she does.
