Climate change could slowly alter Northeast forests

BENEDICTA, Maine - An autumn drive through the rugged forests of New England and eastern Canada presents a convincing case that this is the place where postcard images are made.

Looking deeper, biologists see red flags and hear the clanging of alarm bells.

“When I see that forest, I see change,” said Justin Richardson, a biogeochemist and assistant professor in the University of Massachusetts.

Mr. Richardson, who conducted extensive research on the changing climate and its impact on the forests of the region as part of his doctoral work in Dartmouth College’s Department of Earth Sciences, led a 2016 study that concluded climate change is prompting a makeover of the forests of greater New England.

His study concluded that certain climate scenarios project that the stands of coniferous trees in that part of the country will lose 70 to 100 percent of their current range to deciduous trees by 2085 because of increased temperature and precipitation, as well as changes in timber harvesting.

Besides the accompanying impact on the many birds and mammals that utilize this diverse forest habitat, Mr. Richardson said, the climate-related change in the forest will likely alter the way the trees in the region cycle nutrients and store toxic metals in their underlying soil, since coniferous trees hold these materials in the ground for longer periods of time.

Didn’t know that. I do know forests have a lifecycle. Always changing, mostly at the edges, but also inside.

Also, in NJ, we have far too many democrats. They are just unhealthy to be around as well.

Don't you have a hunting season for them?

Reality will never get in the way of the delusion of the left.

Even if they don’t believe their lies, they insist that you do, for benefit of their Stalinist policies.

And you know why that fall foliage is even there? Because the pine trees that used to COVER the area were all cut down for ships’ masts. We can thank the colonies for the gorgeous display we have now. Then the area was farmed for a couple hundred years until the industrial revolution presented a better option for people and they abandoned the farms to go down to Lowell and Lawrence for factory work. Which, difficult as it was, was still a far cry more reliable an income than farming rocks in The Granite State. THEN the maples etc moved in.

Le plus ça change...

While I’m sure a lot of tall straight trees were felled for masts, it couldn’t have amounted to more than a few hundred thousand at most.

If by climate change they mean the 6’ of snow we have had in the past 10 days breaking all the trees and leaving them on the ground, then yeah climate change may have an impact on the forest.

It could... but it won’t. Climate change, so-called, is a science establishment boondoggle created to fund scientists’ summer homes, second cars, and scientists’ school fees for Junior.

I am so tired of that photo I don’t want to read your postings anymore.

Can’t you stick Baghdad Bob or others of the same ilk in your posts, to give us some eye relief?

Climate change - what the earth has ALWAYS gone through, as always meant CHANGE; that the LIVING EARTH CHANGES, as some living things are advantaged, and some living things are disadvantaged; while LIFE writ large goes on, BECAUSE IT ADAPTS.

It seems as if every living thing on earth is genetically prepared to adapt to climate change - everything BUT humans.
