US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.

Thanking Mr Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Mr Trump said the new state secretary would do "a fantastic job".

Mr Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was only appointed to the job just over a year ago.

The president also nominated Gina Haspel to become the first woman director of the CIA.

The Department of State said Mr Tillerson had not spoken to the president and was "unaware of the reason" for his firing.

Under Secretary Steve Goldstein said: "The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security."

Does anyone know who recommended Tillerson to Trump?

Are you a moron? The appointee is the one who is supposed to be loyal.

No, he definitely was CEO at Exxon/Mobil when he accepted the appointment as SofS. They had to do some juggling with his stock options and the terms of his exit to be allowed (govt ethics) to accept a public appointment.

While the Obama admin was making its deal with the Mullahs of Tehran, McMaster was working for an EU-based NGO that was working on, as its main agenda, ............. ........ ....... .......... .................. .....(wait for it) .............. ........... .......... ................... promoting Obama’s deal with the Mullahs of Tehran.

The truth of the matter is that the State Department has been the exclusive province of Leftists for as long as I’ve been alive ( and that would be 77 years). Whether or not they are “Obama Appointees” begs the question, because the DOS has pursued Leftist Foreign Policy Objectives irrespective of who’s been Secretary of State. As is the case with all Federal Agencies, the collective employment has always been Leftist. You can see this on a daily basis when you read about some action by the DOS that leaves you wondering if Trump is actually the President. There needs to be a serious culling of the rank and file employees, because in terms of their actions, they are nearly all “Obama appointees” in terms of their politics.

That’s been in the wind for awhile. Pompeo will be much better. Now if he can get rid of Sessions.

If that is the case, then Trump should have had second thoughts. Isn’t Condi Rice all for illegals and Muslims?

One of the moments during the Benghazi hearing that has stuck in my mind was when Pompeo was questioning Hillary. He asked her if she knew/heard of gun runner Marc Turi. The expression in Hilly’s face changed .... she clamped down all emotion & tried to look very ‘flat’ ... her answer was ‘no’. It was an obvious lie & Pompeo knew it - you could see it on his face. He didn’t pursue it during the hearing, but I’m sure he knows the dirt on Hilly & he’s likely never forgotten that question/lying answer. Pompeo at State is not good news for Hilly.

Here’s the Turi link to Hilly ... and DOJ covered it up for her:

“There are no Obama appointees left at the State Department. Haven’t been since a year ago January. “

There are still people they hired, as well as some Obama appointees who were allowed to move to non-appointed, “hired” positions in the bureaucracy. They will be there until they chose to leave.

“Why doesn’t Trump appoint people he can remain loyal to?”

Loyalty is a two way street.

Exactly! Seemed to me that he and Trump butted heads behind the scenes. Only so much of that Trump will take. Several times it seemed news outlets grabbed their sparring as a sign of discontent between the two.
Tillerson appeared solid, albeit an odd choice to me, but was stable enough in the beginning. I think he pushed his luck with Trump, one to many times. Now he doesn’t fit with where Trump wants to go.
Good riddance I say!

Then you should have differentiated between career staff and political appointees from the beginning. Because unless you are planning on depopulating the State Department and rebuilding from scratch with every change of administration they you are going to have people there serving multiple presidencies.

If you were talking about political appointees only, which I assumed you were based on your statement, they all left when Obama left.

I am just guessing that Trumps style is one where appointees are there for specific purposes in Trumps view, and that may not be the long term institutional general purpose everyone looks at, but things that are more specific and temporary under the changing conditions of the world scene and what Trump wants to prioritize at any given time.

While embassy type state department staffing might be one of the least affected areas of Trumps demands the state department, foggy bottom itself is going to be very much NOT Trump’s long term institutional concern.

At the end of the day, Presidents not the state department make foreign policy.

I hope Pompeo zeros out of the state department zillions of unnecessary things, in billions of dollars, the state department is involved in and not just overseas but domestically here at home as well.

It’s not Trump’s responsibility to remain loyal. It is theirs.

I bet Rex wishes he had stayed at Exxon/Mobil.

Like Gary Cohn, Sec Tillerson got a huge tax exemption to go work for the Trump administration for a year.

Who says government work doesn't pay?

That’s not a fair question, it was a juvenile one. It fails to understand loyalty.

It was just an anti-Trump statement.
