Ross Olmos: NRA built on false notion that gun rights are absolute

As a first step, I would like to challenge Sen. Rubio to publically explain why any American civilian actually needs to own a military assault weapon.

The 2nd Amendment of our Constitution consists of 26 words written in arcane language that has caused much confusion down through the years. Since the amendment was written at a time in our history where virtually every home contained a flintlock musket and gun ownership was an accepted, normal part of everyday life, it’s reasonable to believe that, rather than dealing with individual gun ownership, the 2nd Amendment was intended to protect the right of each state to have its own “well regulated militia.”

However, the NRA has taken the last 14 words of the amendment, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” strictly out of context, to promote a pro-gun agenda that has been amazingly successful. The NRA is recognized as the most powerful and influential government lobbying group in the U.S. They have bought and/or intimidated many politicians — including our own Sen. Marco Rubio, who has taken millions from the NRA — into adopting and promoting their agenda, which includes the following:

Bring one of the Founders back to life and he’d explain that those words mean exactly what they say, and then slap him upside the head for being a dumbass.

Exactly why I oppose CCW permits. In my view, the 2nd is the only permit required but the uber left has raped the constitution repeatedly.

As an American, I shouldn’t have to explain my needs (or wants) to anyone outside of my home. That’s the neat thing about being an American.

It is not about “need.” Aside from the 2nd Amendment, people should these dolts if they “need” a fire extinguisher, life insurance or most anything else in life besides air, water food and shelter.

What is "a military assault weapon"?

We have Ruger 10/22 with adjustable stocks and magazines that hold over 10 rounds. Thus, five miles away in California, they are assault weapons!

I have a Sig Sauer P320, just like what the military has adopted, so is it now a military weapon?

I used to own a 9mm Makarov, which was military surplus. Another military weapon.

I have several AR-15, civilian versions (all semi-automatic). Are they now "a military assault weapon" even though no military in world would rely on a semi-automatic?

The whole discussion is moot if we get back to any interpretation of the 2nd amendment or 14th amendment. Let's not forget the 14th amendment, as it also deals with gun ownership. We have a constitutional right to bear arms and nothing in that said an age limit, a type of weapon, or where or where not.

If the 2nd Amendment only applies to flintlock rifles, then by your own twisted reasoning, you are NOT ALLOWED to express your 1st Amendment rights using a computer, any voice or video system that uses electricity. Also, you cannot use a modern pen or pencil.

Stand on a rock on the corner and yell.

Imbecile.

“As with any other threat to the safety and well being of the public — and especially our children — the rights of individual gun owners (like myself) must be superseded by the need to protect the public at large.”

More accurately: Exercise of the rights of individual gun owners protects the public at large.

Well, in college, I met with the chair of the Criminal Justice dept. about possibly adding that as a second major.

He was a former police officer, too. The Handgun Control, Inc bumper sticker on his office door caused me to decide not to go that route.

The NRA was built on the problem of poor marksmanship of Union troops during the War of Secession. They organized to train people on how to shoot, gun safety and all that.

A semi automatic rifle isn’t an automatic military weapon.

Liberals think guns are scary. Guns aren’t the problem; its the people with the wrong values that are the problem.

We have the inherent and natural right to defend ourselves. It existed in the state of nature long there was civilization.

The Second Amendment merely acknowledges the fact. Our rights come from the state but from God.
