The real Trump? The Trump of the campaign declared entitlement reform off limits and called for a major infrastructure spending binge. Whatever else he is, he's not a fiscal conservative and never pretended to be. Which some of the other candidates in the primaries tried to point out, but got trashed for their efforts.

Trump campaigned as a fiscal Democrat, which is part of what drove the dems crazy. They were used to running against evil, mean-spirited Republicans who wanted to save the country from bankruptcy. Trump jumped on the pixie dust bandwagon with the dems and took the issue away. Trump probably thinks that Obama got to run trillion dollar deficits to media applause, so he is entitled to do the same.
