First it was Confederate monuments. Now statues offensive to Native Americans are poised to topple.

Over the decades, this quiet coastal hamlet has earned a reputation as one of the most liberal places in the nation. Arcata was the first U.S. city to ban the sale of genetically modified foods, the first to elect a majority Green Party city council and one of the first to tacitly allow marijuana farming before pot was legal.

Now it's on the verge of another first.

No other city has taken down a monument to a president for his misdeeds. But Arcata is poised to do just that. The target is an 8½-foot bronze likeness of William McKinley, who was president at the turn of the last century and stands accused of directing the slaughter of Native peoples in the U.S. and abroad.

"Put a rope around its neck and pull it down," Chris Peters shouted at a recent rally held at the statue, which has adorned the central square for more than a century.

Peters, who heads the Arcata-based Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous People, called McKinley a proponent of "settler colonialism" that "savaged, raped and killed."

A presidential statue would be the most significant casualty in an emerging movement to remove monuments honoring people who helped lead what Native groups describe as a centuries-long war against their very existence.

The push follows the rapid fall of Confederate memorials across the South in a victory for activists who view them as celebrating slavery. In the nearly eight months since white supremacists marched in central Virginia to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue, cities across the country have yanked dozens of Confederate monuments. Black politicians and activists have been among the strongest supporters of the removals.

This time, it's tribal activists taking charge, and it's the West and California in particular leading the way.

Try to ignore history and you doom yourself to repeat it.

The uber lib University of Texas removed the statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis two years ago. Last year, they removed Robert E. Lee, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, Gov. James Stephen Hogg and Confederate Postmaster General John H. Reagan because they were symbols of white supremacy and neo-Nazism.

I know a guy who shopped around for a Dodge Charger to make his own General Lee.

One person would not sell once it was found out the plan for the car was.

Eventually, one was bought and it’s being worked on.

what does antifa have to do with the Civil War?

Or, are you just calling names because you don’t want to have to defend slavery?

Red Brigade meets the Taliban vs. John Wayne

Surely they do not want our game of cowboys and indians to play out to the logical finish.

I spend a few days every Summer staying in McKinleyville
at the vacation home of my fishing and hunting pal.
I can’t wait to talk to my friend about this issue.
He is a retired school psychologist but both he and
his wife are politically very conservative.

The point of all this statue removing is for the leftist
anti-American bedwetters to be able to stick a thumb
in the collective eye of patriots. Otherwise they would
be working towards adding statues of their chosen
victims instead of tearing down symbols of local or
widely known icons. To me it is almost a no-brainer.
Who could be in favor of retaining a statue of
McKinley while opposing a statute of a Northern
California Indian icon like Ishi?

Everything is built on war. A large part of Indian men is their warrior fighting skills.

Bastards. These fags should no longer be allowed to call themselves Americans. They are NOT Americans. Native or any other kind. They’re bottomfeeding lowlifes out to destroy the great country that they feed off of. Little Chrissy Peters needs his food stamps shut down.

Of course, there were slave states that fought for the North. Many other Northerners supported slavery and anti-war feelings.

So what? Slavery was wrong and a good many Northerners died to stop it.

Reconstruction all the way to abolishing Jim Crow laws had many failures, but gradually the South matured to generally allow freedom to live in peace and pursue prosperity.

Yes, there still is hypocracy and bigotry and discrimination. But that does not justify ignoring basic human decency and shame over some of our public symbols.

What individual rights by Southern fighters caused 258,000 of them to die in a losing cause?

What encroachment by Northerners happened before the Civil War?

What property, other than slaves, and land was at risk of being lost to Northeners?

Since native Americans fought, killed and enslaved each other, I have to ask, who's next?

Indians owned slaves, a Black was the first legally recognized slave owner in America, but only Whites are evil?

"statues offensive to Native Americans"

In other words, statues Native Americans are supposed to be offended by, according to White Leftists.

Time to stop this madness. If NA Indians don’t want statues, then we don’t need to feed, house and support them because it offends ME.
