OSLO Scientists in developing nations plan to step up research toward dimming sunshine to curb climate change, hoping to judge if a man-made chemical sunshade would be less risky than a harmful rise in global temperatures.
Research into solar geo-engineering, which would mimic big volcanic eruptions that can cool the Earth by masking the sun with a veil of ash, is now dominated by rich nations and universities such as Harvard and Oxford.
Twelve scholars, from countries including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Jamaica and Thailand wrote in the journal Nature on Wednesday that the poor are most vulnerable to global warming and should be more involved.
Developing countries must lead on solar geo-engineering research, they wrote in a commentary.
The overall idea (of solar geo-engineering) is pretty crazy, but it is gradually taking root in the world of research, lead author Atiq Rahman, head of the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, said by telephone.
Among risks, the draft says it might disrupt weather patterns, could be hard to stop once started and might discourage countries from making a promised switch from fossil fuels to cleaner energies.

And of course, the best way to study this will be to charter a ship to Antarctica to see how stuck in the ice they can get the ship, before being airlifted off the deck with all their valuable research.
A few dozen nukes upwind might do it.
We could help with that- we need some target practice
They live on a different planet than this one.
Maybe these anti-science morons in these “developing” (i.e., loser) countries should concentrate on becoming “developed”. No...let’s waste time and money on something that bis proven to not exist. Idiots.
Oh? Like Chemtrails?
Happy AU Day! The Sun is exactly one astronomical unit away from Earth today, and getting further and further away each day (until July)
That’ll cool us off just in time for summer congrats to the global alarmists for scaring Ol’ Sol away ;-)
all we have to do is slather the earth in sunscreen- we’ll be fine
Well played sir!
I see the plot for a SciFi channel movie in this.
Ummm...we live in NW...we want/need MORE SUN!!
Polar bears....cannibalism......amputations.....
Sounds like my family reunion last summer.
Unless they develop a way to block or divert the sun’s rays at a great distance from earth (like a million miles away) there is little to be gained.
Blocking the sun’s rays close to earth will still allow the energy of the sun to strike, be absorbed into, and create heat within the geosphere (ie: everything within the geo-magnetosphere).
In that case the heat not created by the sun’s rays no longer striking the earth’s land or water or atmosphere will be created in some other layer of the biosphere where the rays are being blocked.
And no one knows what unforseen consequences and damage that would create.
I guess the Philippines or Indonesia will do their part by getting one of their volcanoes to erupt (maybe with a nuke from us), and fill the skies with ash.
I’m sure that would not result in any unintended consequences. That is because it comes from the “settled science crowd” and they have been proven right soooo many times already.
Waste of time. They need to concentrate on developing a thermostat for the sun. Turn it up in winter, down in summer.
Will also need to correct the problematic earth axis tilt for better consistency between hemispheres.
There! All problems solved!
For me hats, roofs and umbrellas suffice:-)
Chapter One: Let's do it! Why Not?
Chapter Two: How Was I to Know?
Yes because blocking sunlight and shutting down plant photosynthesis where CO2 is converted into O2, while providing all animal life on Earth food is such a smart choice.
