Pennsylvania school district arming teachers with baseball bats to combat active shooters

While the national debate continues on whether school teachers should be allowed to posses firearms in classrooms, one Pennsylvania school district is moving forward with arming its teachers... with baseball bats.

The Millcreek School District, which is located near Erie, announced it is arming up to 500 teachers with baseball bats in case of an active shooter, WICU-TV reported. The district said it spent $1,800 on the 16-inch wooden bats.

The bats are not quite the same size used in baseball games. Typical baseball bats are at least 30 inches long.

The bats will be locked up, and out of the reach of students. WICU reported that the bats were handed to teachers after a day of training, which included lessons on what to do during an active shooting.

All that's left is a scoring system.

Better than nothing..........better than quaking in your boots and waiting for the cops who are quaking in their uniforms.

Article says “The bats will be locked up, and out of the reach of students. WICU reported that the bats were handed to teachers after a day of training, which included lessons on what to do during an active shooting.”

So how do teachers get the bats, when a man/woman with a gun enters the room? If a gun is not on the teacher in emergency situation, how do they stop shooting? I think it is a false feeling of security!

16” bats? I thought sawed-off bats were illegal.

Like I said, better than nothing. There is nothing that will completely repel an attacker, you have to be willing to fight back.

The school district thinks the proper response to a man with a gun is a miniature baseball bat? No wonder the schools these days produce non-functional idiots.

“Hall conceded that the bats are largely symbolic, but it gives teachers an option to fight back with. “

It’s a 16” bat. More of a baton or nightstick.

Somebody must be in the souvenir wooden baseball bat business (or have a warehouse full of 16-inch wooden bats).

Wouldn't a 16 inch steel fire extinguisher or a fire axe be more effective? And not look out of place in a school?

Scary to consider that anyone who thinks this is a good, effective solution, is educating children.

And now Little Nikolas and Tiny Trayvon will have something easier to wield when they decide to beat the teacher instead of using a chair

Oh, yeah, a short ball bat would fill me with such courage when faced of with a hostile with a firearm. Those administrators are nothing short of morons.

If, as the article said, the bats are locked up...do you think a teacher will be holding the keys to unlock that cabinet as perpetrator enters, or have to look for them? Time is of essence when facing a loaded gun. I doubt this will help anyone. The bucket of rocks sitting on the floor accessible would be more effective, unless they are locked up too!

When someone points a loaded gun at you, there is only a fraction of seconds of lag time that you could respond with a loaded weapon. Finding a bat in a locked closet/cabinet...hahaha, yeah right! See new data:

Baseball bats are a fine idea, but projectiles are a better idea.

You are NOT going to get your average teacher/aide/administrator to shoot back. Great idea, right idea, not the solution.

You are unlikely to get them to close with a shooter sufficiently to use a baton or a bat.

You COULD (IMO) train them to throw hard objects at a shooter’s face which, in conjunction with a practiced evacuation plan could save a lot of lives.

You have that right! Even if teacher has a gun...see forensic statistics on response time:

Yeah...that’s the answer..bringing a bat to a gunfight...the likely outcome is the bat-wielder will be the first to die...

From the stories about female teachers nowadays, I predict those 16” bats will actually be used in non-combative ways...
