Paul Ryan had all-star talent as a legislator and fundraiser, and the realization of his career-long goal of tax reform is a monumental legacy.
He has been an adept policy wonk, and his work as the pre-eminent Obamacare critic on Capitol Hill was nothing short of inspirational, most notably in 2010 as the ranking member of the House Budget Committee.
That year at the bipartisan White House Summit on Health Care, Ryan put on a savant-level clinic on sound economic policy and on the harmful ramifications the Democratic health care bill would have. He spoke with analytical flourish but kept his logic simple, such as when he admonished President Obama, Hiding spending does not reduce spending. He was both heartfelt and professorial at once, and during the televised event, President Obama, a lecturer if there ever was one, seemed to morph from commander in chief into a first-year pupil.

I’m convinced that you’re really a liberal.
Ryan was putty in the hands of Demonic-rats. Of course they love him.
“The Herald is not the Globe.”
Well, if they are praising Ryan then there isn’t much difference.
Wow, I want whoever wrote this to write my resume.
I wonder who will run in his place. I wonder the same for the other 10 or so Republicans who decided recently not to run for re-election.
As if we didn’t already know, this proves how useless Rino Ryan was.
I can’t believe they got rid of John ‘Bonehead’ Boehner, only to get someone even worse.
Let’s see-—$1.3B to help dig our children an insurmounatble debt grave-—acting “wisely” indeed!
But at least he has helped steer millions more children to an EARLY grave, via half a billion to Planned Parenthood, so they won’t be around to witness the oncoming economic collapse!
Paul Ryan yielded gavel wisely.
There. Fixed it.
That should have been $1.3 T! Sorry!
“Is it just that darn hard to get a Speaker like Newt was in 95?”
If they were smart, they’d give him the job again! The Speaker doesn’t have to be a member.
“I wonder who will run in his place”
Has anyone announced yet? I still can’t believe we finally got rid of that POS Boehner only to get someone just as bad. My fear is the many RINO”S will ally with the Rats and it will happen again, assuming we keep the House of course.
I really fell for the guy politically years ago, only to quickly realize what a big fat fraud the man is. This phony “family” excuse only serves to help me loathe the man more. How many days do these goofs actually WORK in Washington? Everyone knows that leftist STAFFERS and REGULATORS write legislation!
PRyno is a troubled NeverTrumper and his departure is a personal victory for Trump.
PRyno is not an asset in the House nor for the 2018 election. All of the multitudinous House GOPee NeverTrumpers have made their bed and are on their own.
Groucho Marx was right. I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.
If Mitt Romney was willing to have him as his VP that should have been a YUGE red flag.
I wonder what his pension and healthcare benefits are going to be in retirement. I bet it will be very cushy. I am glad he is leaving, as he would have screwed over people who contributed to Social Security and he wanted to cut the program. All the while he knew his healthcare and pension were safe.
I believed that picking Ryano was a sop to the conservative base. Silly me!
envious drivel
OK. I’ve been here on FR for 17 years and I have almost 75,000 posts to my name. Go back and read them all ... then tell me how liberal you think I am.
I think you are delusional.
Yep, the Herald's editorial staff are diehard "globalism uber alles" types.
