Pentagon Presented Trump With Plan To Take Out Russian Air Defenses In Syria, Report Says

Although the recent Syrian airstrikes were double the size of last year's, President Trump reportedly selected one of the more restrained proposals designed by the Pentagon.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported that Trump was presented with a wide array of options. There were intense discussions on the best approach after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis presented the three military options, the report said.

Trump chose a restrained response. The paper reported that the most expansive proposal included airstrikes on Russian air defense capabilities in Syria. The attack would have been three times the size of the operation carried out -- which included 100 advanced missiles launched at three targets.

Trump reportedly wanted his team to consider the strikes on Iranian and Russian targets, but Mattis resisted. Mattis reportedly warned of a possible Russian and Iranian response.

Take a deep breath and grow up, people. The Pentagon prepares thousands of plans that never get executed. It’s part of their job to consider contingencies and develop plans to address them. There’s nothing shocking or crazy about this. If they weren’t doing this, they would be derelict in their duties.

Nonsense comparison.

Taking out radars to protect our assets has been military strategy for over 50 years.

It would be irresponsible not to include the option.

Or, these possibilities we’re covered just so they could be “leaked” and let it be known to the Russians they were let off easy.

Agreed. And, by the same token, we no longer have to destroy them with kinetic weapons, just disable them at the right time and for a specified period.

Think Deir ez-Zor, Syria - September 2007.

Thoughtful points, but I think doubtful - as the whole point was to stop the spread and use of chemical weapons by the Russians (and others) used in Syria and the UK.

Assad didn’t just say ‘oh well lets gas them and make every body mad at me’. He had to clear it with the Russians and very possibly the Iranians al Qods troops under Major General Q. Soleimani’s command.

Germany is shipping chemical weapon components to Iran which are then shipped to Syria keeping Assad supplied. So that was the message to all concerned - we will obliterate your chemical weapons factories and stocks.

DJT was just asking for a more forceful alternative which would have escalated right off the bat. Perhaps, if the weapons are used again, then a stronger ‘worded’ message may be sent.

someone is going to be fired.

Unless you threaten to fire everyone in the room, it's a meaningless gesture.

Hitlers biggest mistake was declaring war on the US. The isolationists whould never had agreed to go to war in Erurope in 41 or 42. Germany never attacked the US. That was the standard then. Had Herr Hitler waited for the V2 been developed wither multiple stages, the outcome would have been different.

Hitler had the non agreesion pact with Stalin and England was subdued.

If Hitler had not invaded the USSR, had made a separate peace with the UK in 1940, then the post WWII world would have had a three way cold war between Western democracies, Fascist Europe(Third Reich) and the USSR.

The whole point of making a separate peace with the UK, would have been to give Hitler a free hand to invade Russia.
