[FULL TITLE] Anatomy of a Presidential Untruth: What Data Did the Justice Department Really Provide the White House?

On Feb. 10 of last year, a Justice Department lawyer in the department’s National Security Division (NSD) assembled some data on international terrorism convictions for transmission to the White House. The lawyer, a man named George Toscas, included in his email to his superiors what he described as “some general statements that are supported by [the data] and can be used publicly.”

**snip**In the wake of that analysis, Benjamin Wittes filed a Freedom of Information Act suit to find out how precisely the president came to so dramatically mischaracterize Justice Department data by way of imputing a disproportionate share of terrorism to immigrants. As he described the underlying FOIA request:**see article**

Hmmmm...let’s see, how about realizing that when we catch terrorists after their act most times they weren’t born here???

A quick peek at the front page of this “Lawfare” site suggests to me that it’s published by passionate admirers of Saul Alinsky. But then the legal community is chock full of such admirers.

People who see words as reality tend to go the Alinsky route, sooner or later.

Arguing the converse, what the author says is that most terrorism is caused by American citizens, born right here.

When was any American charged with terrorism?

...Ellingsen and Daniels determined: “The data Trump cited ... simply don’t support his claims that a ‘vast majority’ of individuals on the list came from outside the United States
—unless, that is, you include individuals who were forcibly brought to the United States in order to be prosecuted and exclude all domestic terrorism cases."

There's a lot of technical wrangling here. Wouldn't terrorists 'forcibly brought" to the US more likely be foreign born? Could domestic terrorist acts be instigated and aided from outside the country? Could domestic terror be committed by foreign-born citizens or residents? How do you decided whether terrorist acts are domestic or international? Indeed, what makes a crime terrorism in the first place? For example, is a high school bomb threat a terrorist act or a prank?

At the Bundy trial ‘domestic terrorists’ were charged for setting a backfire to protect their ranch that reached onto adjoining Fed property. Meanwhile the Ft. Hood shooting by a Muslim terrorist was labeled as ‘workplace violence’ by Obama. THAT’s why Trump likely ignored the politicized definition of ‘terrorist’ to accent American ‘terrorists’.

Going back that far, you’d have to count the 18 hijackers in 2001 and the WTC bombers in 1993. Obviously, the author didn’t go back as far as McVeigh. Nor did she count the Arab bombers. Seems like a cherry-picked dataset to justify a pre-determined conclusion.

So the question remains, where are the Americans IN THE DATASET that are Americans.
