Some time ago I found a progressive over at Hannity talking up equivalence between Venezuela under socialism and some other place (Central American, I can’t presently where) that he characterized as right wing.

I do recall trying to point out the inherent difference that invalidated the comparison he’d been trying to make: that his right wing country had never had much wealth but Venezulea under socialism had rapidly gone from prosperous to a basket case ... but he simply refused to understand.

The Russians, and especially the Chinese, already "own" or rather are owed, quite a bit of oil that is still in the ground. The problem is that to get that oil they'd have to replace more infrastructure than it's worth. Chevron is still hanging in hoping for a regime change, but their people there can't feed themselves on the money they do get and if Chevron pulls the plug completely, they starve. So they run. I certainly would.

What it must be like to be Venezuelan doctors watching their patients die for lack of basic medications, hanging in themselves and also hoping for regime change, is all too easy to imagine. Those patients are hostages as well. At its last stage - Zimbabwe reached this - the entire population is hostage and the ransom is an unending supply of foreign aid that goes into the pockets of the same thieves responsible for the disaster. Collapse is not imminent, but suffering is inevitable. And fools in the United States still defend socialism.
