Sheetz or Wawa? This Pittsburgher's documentary will examine Pennsylvanians' loyalties

A filmmaker is planning a documentary about one of the many debated aspects of Pennsylvania's interstate rivalry between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

No, it's not whether the NHL's Penguins or Flyers are better. With the Pens up 3 games to 1 in the Stanley Cup playoffs, there doesn't appear to be much debate over that.

The rivalry to be explored in the documentary: Sheetz versus Wawa .

"The rivalry is not between the stores, the rivalry is really between the fans," said Matthew Fridg, a Pittsburgh-based filmmaker behind the documentary.

Fridg hopes to answer the age-old question of which gas station and convenience store is superior with help from taste tests and the "fiercely loyal" fans in Western and Eastern Pennsylvania where the chains are based.

"I'm not trying to tear one business down," Fridg said. "Both businesses have very good community and employee relations. I want to showcase and really celebrate that aspect of them."

I first saw Sheetz in West Virginia and assumed the stores were named after their former Senator, Robert “KKK” Byrd.

Fine, but a lot of places there’s only one or the other.

There everywhere here but who the hell comes up with these names?

Mr. Sheetz's ancestors, in the one case. Not an uncommon name in Pennsylvania.

I concur.
We have 2 fast food places in my town...McDonald’s and Sheetz.

My 2 year old got a stomach bug last winter and barfed up our Sheetz dinner in the car.

That was the proverbial straw. I could barely stomach it before that.

Competition tends to raise all standards but the only Get Gos near me sell prepackaged hoagies in plastic. They aren’t bad, but they aren’t as good a fresh either.

Wawa is a suburb of Philly. It is Native American for goose, hence the goose...

Wawa. But I like how Sheetz plays 80s music.

Wawa, PA is the name of the town in which the company originally started, as the Wawa Dairy. It is from the language of the original inhabitants of the area, the Leni-Lenape Indians—their word for Canada goose. You can see a Canada goose in the Wawa stores' logo.

Someone upthread mentioned that Sheetz is the family name of the people who started the Sheetz chain.

Wawa means Goose in a local Indian dialect. The corporation is headquartered in Wawa, Pennsylvania.

>>Whenever I go to Wawa I get the Sheetz.<<

We only have Sheetz here in western Maryland. I go there often, but I never get the Wawa.

>> I would be curious if you had a link or other documentation. Sheetz is headquartered in Altoona, which would be like Rawlins, Wyoming in terms of being a pro-second amendment area.<<

Ditto, because if true, I’ve made my last stop at Sheetz. And I will spread the word in my area.

No contest. Royal Farms beats both Sheetz and Wawa.

Personally, I think Speedway, a recent out of state import, even bests Sheetz on most food. And Sheetz has better food than Wawa, but Wawa has a better selection of travel related stuff.

Interesting, because Wawa is now an out-of-state import to Florida, and seems to be fancier than either Racetrac or Speedway, both of which we have had in Fla. for years. I like the Wawa kiosks, and the prices seem to be reasonable as well. Sheetz hasn't made an appearance down here yet, as far as I know...
