Toronto van attack: Calm actions of police stun US
BBC News ^ | 24th April 2018 | BBC News

The calm actions of a police officer who arrested the Toronto van suspect without firing a shot have prompted praise and, in some quarters, astonishment.

Video from the scene shows suspect Alek Minassian pointing an object at the officer and shouting: "Kill me!"

The officer tells the man to "get down" and when the suspect says he has a gun, the officer repeats: "I don't care. Get down."

Videos on social media show Mr Minassian lying down as the officer arrests him.

Many in North America are asking how the suspect did not end up dead in a hail of police gunfire. It contrasts with incidents in the US where police have shot and killed unarmed people.

"Research has shown that Canadian police are reluctant users of deadly force," says Rick Parent, a criminologist at Simon Fraser University in Canada's British Columbia.

"An analysis of police shooting data over many years revealed, that in comparison to their American counterparts, Canadian police officers discharge their firearms far less, per capita than US police. However, like American police officers they take many risks in protecting the public."

One US-based academic told the BBC that the officer would have had a "duty" to kill the suspect, if the object he was pointing was a gun.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders told journalists the officer had done a "fantastic job" to understand the "circumstance and environment" and get to a "peaceful resolution".

He said police in the city were "taught to use as little force as possible in any given situation".

Mike McCormack, president of the Toronto Police Association, told the Globe and Mail newspaper that the officer was a "hero" and could have justified opening fire.

Barney lived way down in North Carolina and wasn’t bald headed.

And besides, he and Andy both passed away not too long ago.

Andy would have walked up to him and put his arm around him told him “aw shucks”, never handcuffed him and walked him over to the jail. Wouldn’t have been none of that rough stuff.

Stunned the US?

Look, they Canadians do not have a death penal.ty. They love wringing their hands and kissing the feet of cold hearted criminalss , like the Vincent Weiguang Li’s murder by decapitation of Time McLean on a Greyhound bus on July 30 , 2008. Li was adjudged as not guilty ny reason of insanity and was completely rehabilitated and discharged by February 10, 2017. ( SIC)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Tim_McLean

The dame could happen with Alek Minassian.

IMHO as an American I am not stunned. Sometimnes its more just for a police officer to pull the trigger, especially for the families of the 10 murdered men and women.

This is an instance where not shooting was ill advised, given the hand wringing liberal Canadian justice system which protects criminals but miserably fails to protect law abiding citizens and victims of crime. That’s truly STUNNED.

I guess the point being we don’t have enough dead cops in the last couple of years.

Lot of dead, unarmed suspects though.

IIRC, the Canadian soldier who was murdered in 2014 while guarding a war memirial was carrying a weapon that wasn’t loaded. Why I’m curious if the police who didn’t fire could have.

Are Canadian cops issued weapons loaded with live ammo? If the answer is not always, then maybe there’s another reason cops didn’t plug the perp.

Are you honestly suggesting that Canadian police officers are sent out with unloaded weapons? Really?

I don’t see an analysis in the article about how often Canadian cops get shot compared to American cops in similar situations.

Unlike their American counterparts, Canadian officers aren't facing feral, violent, untamed animals.

This guy just killed 10 people. How much more violent do you want?

I had an interesting casual conversation in a gun shop with a long-time GBI agent recently. His comment was that when he was a young man, the bad guys wanted to fight you. Today, they want to shoot and kill you. He was glad to be close to retirement.

It’s pretty clear that no policeman was going to give the killer what he wanted.

If the perp kept his mouth shut he might have got his wish.

Toronto cops have plugged a few people under somewhat questionable circumstances, but you make a very good point.

Now we have to pay for this guy to be imprisoned, go to trial, have legal counsel, etc. etc. Who knows....with the buffoon we have in Ottawa the terrorist could very well get a cheque for $11 million for his troubles!

If your police just shoot suspects on sight think of how much money you will save. No need for trials so no courts and no judges. No living prisoners so no need for jails or guards. No legal counsel needed for dead suspects. Gee, you may be on to something here. </sarcasm>
