It turns out Oregonians are good at growing cannabis—too good. In February, state officials announced that 1.1 million pounds of cannabis flower were logged in the state's database.
If a million pounds sounds like a lot of pot, that's because it is: Last year, Oregonians smoked, vaped or otherwise consumed just under 340,000 pounds of legal bud.
This month, WW spoke to two dozen people across Oregon's cannabis industry. They describe a bleak scene: Small businesses laying off employees and shrinking operations. Farms shuttering. People losing their life's savings are unable to declare bankruptcy because marijuana is still a federally scheduled narcotic.

Well, he's not my neighbors, nor my mechanic—dead at 30.
Now that I think about it, my first mechanic got a pilots license, and flew to Columbia back in the 70s—ostensibly for cocaine purchases. His last trip, with his 13-year-old son, was their last trip anywhere. :(
So, the Oregon market for cannabis consist completely of bud and ignores the leaf entirely?
But considering the glut the market is in, I can see that happening.
Concentrates (wax, dab, ...) are to pot leaves and flowers; as distilled drinks are to beer. You can get as drunk (or high)on either — depending on how immoderate you want to be. In each case, the active ingredients are the same. OTOH, crack cocaine and powder cocaine are chemically different — while both are bad, crack is clearly the worst.
Leaf is tumbled in a cold cylinder, by some, to knock off any trichomes to make keif, a hash precursor. You could also simmer it in butter to make a canna butter for cooking. Many varieties have lost their leaves by the time the flowers are ready. Or you can throw it in the wood stove, as it would count against the 8 ounces a household can possess.
They don’t call it “weed” for nothing.. I wish people would learn to smoke crab grass..
Very good weed can be grown in Alaska and Canada. Varietals have been bred to deal with short growing seasons. I think you get a surplus just about anywhere you can grow it.

Same here. Those who didn’t die young (many from school days) were on oxygen in their late 50s and early 60s last year (couple of ‘em).

It’s a great crop and can be used for textiles, rope and other consumer products besides smoking it and losing your mind.
It’s volunteer crop from Midwest farmers growing it for hemp rope. My great uncle was one of them. Couldn’t get rid of the stuff, it was still a problem on his land in the 70’s. Useless as a recreational drug. (Or so I’ve been told by reliable sources)
Boom and bust cycles, next comes an allotment system. Just like tobacco.
