Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday.
The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

Every time a baby is born the staff takes a blood sample from both the mother and baby, and gives it to the government, and yet does not ask permission to do this.
Few people know about this, and delivery is not a good time to fight it.
Not anymore, took some time off of work, lots of ice, tried to relax.
All better now
Shoulda been a doctor, instead of a pipe fitter
Only a fool would willing send their DNA to these ancestry sites!
Thankfully we can trust the government!/sarc
They originally said they got a partial match from an arrested brother then a warrant.
I thought of Warren too. And she absolutely should be outed for this Native American cr*p.
BTW,. my father tried to establish his Native Heritage (First People actually since his ancestors came from British Colombia). But he could not do it. There were virtually no records, and the tribe did not keep any. His Mom was some high degree of Indian, but at the time, people tried to keep this information from others. (Not hip). Also, they did not have DNA testing to come to his aid. Now we know he would have qualified. I don’t have enough of Indian genetics to qualify, but it does give me a respect for my background. (Vancouver Island is where the reservation is today.)
It would be interesting to have fishing rights on the Colombia river “as long as the sun continues to rise and set”.
This could be an outcome if one were to have their parents and themselves go into the data base.
In my case, my sister and I did it at very separate times but Ancestry informed both of us that we were closely related, possibly family members.
The Tijuana Water Authority?
I for one agree: creepy and intrusive overreach.
Actually, it is fascistic: COLLUSION between private enterprise and government agency.
It is all the rage these days. Ask Zuckbook.
This whole DNA thing is going to make a lot of criminals have sleepless nights, as they should.
...
They can even do sketches based on DNA now, and it’s worked to catch the perp.
With all the doom and gloom paranoid and exaggerated thinking on this thread I wonder if FReepers have a high rate of depression.
