I don’t think that is necessary. All the police need to do is send in a sample of the perp’s DNA and use any made up name for example John Doe Rapist.
Then the service will try to locate any one who is a relative — even if very distant. Then you have to do the detective work to find out if this person has any one who could be a valid suspect. The actual person does not need to put in DNA and they don’t have to ask for permission to search the data base.
After all, the true perp will very likely not be a user of the system, this method of tracking depends on a population of people who are interested in who may be related to them.
Gotta read the fine print when you sign up for this stuff.
My older brother already had his done at Ancestry.com so I am very happy I dont have a checkered past.
Tis true, the DNA does not lie. My wife and I did this, she found out that family lore that she was part Native American turned out to be false. I however am 8% Native American.
My wife did find a cousin in another state with whom she corresponded and found out that she has ancestors who came to this country via France. Its cool to explore things like this, and who knows, we may help solve a crime, on the part of one of our inlaws or outlaws.
Nobody but myself, and sometimes I wonder about me!
The number of people who have done DNA are reaching the point that most criminals can probably be found through their relatives. My wife found her father and mother through 2nd cousins on Ancestry, and then her brother did the same thing. (They were adopted.) It worked out, but for someone who never wanted to be found, it could be a problem. For criminals, a big problem.
in this case it was a good thing...but how do people feel about having their dna at the govt’s disposal?...knowing the alphabet cops corruption, could they possibly change/plant your dna fingerprint at a crime scene?
Yep. My father in-law is adopted, and found his half-brother and sister through ancestry.com DNA matches. I wonder how many people find out they are not related to their father?
Nothing prevents this from being used to track down political dissidents. Anyone who thinks the state won’t eventually abuse their power is delusional.

Went to the doctor for bursitis in my knee. They gave me this huge questionnaire asking all sorts of personal family history. I asked, what this have to do with my knee?
They said, oh it’s just standard questions.
I told them to pound sand!
Either treat the knee or kma
Precisely.
what you describe is horrifying.
these site should NOT be in the business of doing that unless served with a warrant for a specific person’s dna.
“So we all trust the FBI when they say they found somebodys DNA at a crime scene?”
Or when they ‘exonerate’ someone based on “DNA evidence”. Long ago I met with the leader of a victim’s rights group and we got on to DNA ‘evidence’ and she agreed - seemed a bit too perfect. Our local lab was shut down a year later because they produced fraudulent results.
So how long before Trump’s DNA is allegedly found in Moscow...seems like a great way to frame him.
So,I’ll describe you to the police as having a limp?
This is a huge step forward in crime fighting. It is a stroke of genius. Hats off to those who developed this plan from and old street cop.
It may be the way they did this was to send some of his DNA to a site like 23 and Me under an assumed name. The company would then respond with a report that You have relatives, and they would follow up from there. That way, the company would not know it was participating in a criminal investigation or releasing its customers information to the police. At the same time, there is no reason why any number of other government agencies and private organizations couldnt gain access to the database in the same way.

Free Republic Group Think of course
