US-backed SDF forces say they regain villages seized by Syrian army

US coalition jets hit attacking forces believed to include Iranian-backed militias operating in Deir Ezzor area: Diplomat

US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said they expelled Syrian troops who briefly took control of a string of villages in oil rich areas east of the Euphrates River near the Iraqi border on Sunday.

SDF forces led by the Kurdish YPG militia said they launched a counter-attack against Syrian troops backed by Russian forces, adding they were driven "far away" from four villages they had seized earlier in the day.

"Our forces regained the initiative," they said in a statement.

It did not say if the US coalition took part in the operation. Washington has a strong military presence in the area in eastern Syria that holds the bulk of the country's oil and gas reserves, according to regional diplomatic sources.

A US Army statement sent to Reuters confirmed the attack on SDF forces by what it called pro-government forces near Deir Ezzor city and said the "coalition used established deconfliction channels to de-escalate the situation", without elaborating.

Assad regime says its forces captured 4 villages in Syria's Deir Ezzor province following rare clashes with the US-backed SDF east of the Euphrates Riverhttps://t.co/UW5RFkSWAw

Things are hot again in Deir Ezzor.

Reliable sources outside this article indicate the SDF recaptured all 4 villages. There was bombing by the US forces during the recapture.

Think I read about a meeting scheduled for Russia, Turkey and Iran this week. Not sure it has happened yet, but I might have missed it.

Sorry. This action has been going on for a day. No word broke until past few hours. I suspect after the 4 towns were recaptured.

Syrian Army (SAA) has announced they will be making multiple attacks North/East of the Euphrates. Guess we will see how far this actually goes.

Russia, Turkey and Iran all have agenda’s. We have complicated their takeover of the ME.

Like our agenda is to occupy Syria’s oil fields and most Americans support this mission
They were told we were there to fight ISIS

Erdogan the Islamist’s invasion of Afrin complicated the end of ISIS. Turkey does not want ISIS eliminated, he employed 3,000 in the capture of Afrin. They are Sunni like Erdogan and like Saddam was. And he used many al Qaeda terrorists too.

Bad cocktail this brew is.

The SDF crossed the Euphrates River and occupied the 5 villages of Junaynah, Jayah, Shamrt Hossan, Huwayjat Ma’ishyah and Shaqrah for a few hours.

Looks like 6 to 9 Kurds KIA in the counterattack that included Apache gunships.

The Kurds had just turned those towns over to local tribal militias.

Why are we helping a terrorist group sieze territory from a sovereign country?

So the Kurds are just mercenaries...looks like they’ll have to be put down.

The Kurds are only considered terrorists by Turkey. You must be siding with Erdrogan.

And you consider Syria to be “sovereign” these days? Tell that to Tehran.

The Deir Ezzor area is key to our plan to get out.
It affects Kurds, Iraq and Israel- and their adversaries.

Gotta prepare a battlefield for a withdrawal. Just like one has to prepare it for an attack.
