Former ambassador to Vietnam: Trump wanted me to send back refugees
San Jose Mercury ^ | April 6, 2018 | Tatiana Sanchez

Former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said he resigned from his post last year after the Trump administration asked him to pressure the Vietnamese government to receive more than 8,000 Vietnamese refugees marked in the U.S. for deportation.

The vast majority of the people targeted for deportation — sometimes for minor crimes — were war refugees who had established lives in the U.S. after fleeing the Vietnam War more than 40 years ago, Osius wrote in an essay this month for the American Foreign Service Association.

Have they been in the USA more than 40 years or just that the Vietnam War was more than 40 years ago? The ambassador’s statement is unclear. If it is the former, why haven’t these people become US citizens during their more than 40 years here?

Almost ‘nuff said - check out the “journalist’s” C.V.:

Tatiana Sanchez covers race, demographics and immigration ... She got her start in [pimping for] marginalized immigrant communities. [She then moved on to “cover”] multicultural communities, social justice topics and life on [la Frontera.] A Bay Area [lefty], she received a master’s in journalism from Columbia “University’s” [Stalinist Indoctrination Center].

There, fixed it.

Why don't we let the market decide that issue?

If, as you claim, there are "more than enough" nail salons operating in this country then a certain number of nail salons will thrive, while others will fail. These failures will occur until the "correct" number of nail salons is reached.

At least that is my understanding of how a free market operates.

The refugees that left Vietnam in the late 70s and early 80s were predominantly ethnic Chinese who were purged from Vietnam. Many do not even speak Vietnamese, but virtually all have become American in every way.

Former ambassador to Vietnam: Trump wanted me to send back refugees

Vietnam war effectively ended in 1972, 46 years ago. I'm not buying refugee status. That would be like someone showing up in 1991 and claiming they were a WWII refugee

Also need to add San Jose Mercury, as they are as anti-Trump as any of them.

“They aren’t refugees after all but illegal aliens who committed crimes while residing in our country. “

They are not illegal. They were admitted here as refugees after the Vietnam war ended and given legal refugee status here. Most arrived as “boat people” (Vietnamese who ESCAPED from Vietnam by boat) and many came from Vietnamese refugee camps in Thailand.

If (who has checked out the “8,000” claim) they could have been deported, they would have to have been legal residents (legal “Green Card” holders) who had not yet obtained citizenship, and who - at some time in the past - had broken some law, committing a felony.

Frankly, given why they - the Vietnamese - came to this country (many of who sided with the U.S. in the war), and with the millions of ILLEGALS in the country, I think it is poor use of ICE and other federal resources to go after such folks.

In fact, given the number of ILLEGALS in the country and prioritizing ICE and other resources they, ILLEGALS, should be 99.999999% of the priority.

I worry that DHS and ICE are boosting “deportation” numbers to impress a lot of non-thinking people - pulling in thousands of green card holders, while the numbers of ILLEGALS are not changing greatly. Makes news that some cheer but is not getting the most important job done - ILLEGALS.

“WTF was a gay guy, doing as the American ambassador to Vietnam?”

My son had to do a “current event” report for school about the Dominican Republic. There was a huge scandal there about Obama appointing an openly gay ambassador (and his “husband”) to a place where homosexuality was either illegal or one step away from it. In any event the country didn’t want a gay ambassador but Obama just had to do it. I wonder if that was a pattern with him.

Nguyen said many of the Vietnamese immigrants with deportation orders came to the U.S. after the Vietnam War and no longer have ties to their home country.

“They are people who came here as refugees and who don’t really recognize the Vietnam that exists today as their country anymore,” she said.

If they have not taken the necessary steps to become U.S. citizens during their alleged 40+ years in this country, then they cannot claim they "no longer have ties to their home country". They most definitely have ties to Vietnam because they are still de facto citizens of Vietnam.

In my experience, the overwhelming majority of the legitimate war refugees who came to this country at the end of the Vietnam War were documented as they entered and were accepted as legal immigrants. And, the majority of those legal immigrants became U.S. citizens at the earliest possible date allowed.

I grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I remember quite a number of families settling in that area during the time I was 8 to 12 years old, in the early to mid-1970s. I went to school with their children. Most of those kids loved this country more than did a lot of the spoiled, rich, white rich brats of liberal parentage with whom I also shared classrooms. Most of the Vietnamese kids with whom I went to school were hard-working and very intelligent - and even those who were not particularly smart were tenacious in their efforts to do well in school. And most of them were very eager to become United States citizens.

That is my experience with Vietnamese war refugees. I know my evidence is only anecdotal, but I simply do not believe that the "vast majority" of the people discussed in this story are legitimate refugees of the war in Vietnam. I'm sure some of them are, but some is a long way from "vast majority".

Sources please for that claim. I have relatives in Texas who would greatly disagree with you.

The one caveat I will make to my earlier comment involves the possibility that many of the Vietnamese who are being deported now did not come here as documented refugees at the end of the war but came later, on their own, possibly even in recent years, illegally. To me THEY stand in a different status than those who came as legal refugees at the end of the war and obtained their green cards.

Thank you for saying that. I’ve known a lot of hard working Vietnamese refugees that hate communism and love the freedom in this country.

So goofball ambassador tries to virtue signal because he cares more about folks who should be deported than the American people

So the article does not state that this ambassador was an Obama appointee that was about to be cleaned out of his post with the rest of the trash left there by Obama when Trump was elected and now creates the disingenuous story he resigned because Trump wanted to deport Vietnamese criminals back to Vietnam who came here after 1995 well after the Vietnam war was over and were not refugees from the war.Quite a few facts left out I would say.

<< Sources please for that claim.

The source is myself. I helped several hundred of the boat people to resettle after they arrived here in the late 70s and early 80s and were helped by a number of church groups. I was initially very surprised at how many did not speak Vietnamese. I had expected to be able to talk with them, since I was an interpreter when I was in Vietnam. Even my Vietnamese wife who has been a citizen since 1972 could not converse with them.
And that’s my source.

Vietnam today, like China, is CINO (Communist in Name Only). There is more Made in Vietnam stuff in your local stores than Made in USA. I doubt these people have anything to fear at this point, and if they were slated for deportation there’s a reason.

Your experience is anecdotal and cannot be said to represent most of all the refugees from Vietnam, even when it is true that many were ethnically Chinese - it makes no difference. Most of the Chinese in Vietnam were Vietnamese citizens, of ethnic Chinese origins, with families who had been part of Vietnam for generations - just like the Chinese of any Chinatown in the U.S. If there were “refugees” from the U.S. (for some unimaginable reason) would you classify Japanese Americans as not really “American refugees”?
