Rep. Adam Schiff (D., Calif.) on Sunday said it was potentially concerning U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis would express skepticism about special counsel Robert Muellers investigation.
"I can understand the judge asking certain of these questions, although some seem to be non-germane," Schiff said on CNN's "State of the Union."
Ellis questioned whether investigators mandate covered charges of tax and bank fraud against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, even though they are unrelated to the 2016 election, the Wall Street Journal reported. Ellis suggested Muellers team was simply trying to put pressure on Manafort "to sing" and reveal information about President Donald Trump.
"You don't really care about Mr. Manafort," Ellis said to Muellers team. "You really care about what information Mr. Manafort can give you to lead you to Mr. Trump and an impeachment, or whatever."
Ellis was equally blunt in saying there must be limits on Muellers authority.
"We dont want anyone with unfettered power," Ellis said.
The president read some of the judge's comments during his speech at the National Rifle Association Annual Meeting Friday and affirmed Ellis' concerns, praising him as a "respected" judge.
CNN's Jake Tapper asked Schiff about the judge's pushback on the Mueller investigation.
"You heard the president touting that criticism from a federal judge about the investigation on Friday before the NRA saying that Robert Mueller is ultimately only interested in evidence of wrong doing by the president himself," CNN anchor Jake Tapper said. "The president accurately quoted the judge and the CNN story about the judge. Is the judge wrong?"
"I'm not sure that it is germane for example for the judge to be asking how much Bob Mueller has spent on the investigation. It is appropriate to ask about the scope of what Bob Mueller is doing I can understand the judge asking certain of these questions, although some seem to be non-germane to the legal issues involved," Schiff said.
Tapper followed up by asking if Schiff is concerned about Ellis' statement that Mueller and his team are only interested in Manafort in order to get him to flip and reveal incriminating information about Trump.
"Doesn't that concern you that a judge would think that?" Tapper asked.
"It does concern me if it influences the judge's review of the facts and the law. That seems to be the judge questioning motives of the special counsel
I think that Bob Mueller will prevail in the sense of being able to go forward with the litigation. I don't think there is legal question about that," Schiff said.

What’s really concerning is that Schiff doesn’t understand such a simple concept.
I believe the legal term in this case would be "leading the witless."
This is really not much different than Steffy quickly getting Obama to pivot when he inadvertently revealed he was a Muslim. When a fellow traveler is on the set, they are coaches and minders.
...Schiff on Mueller Investigation: Its Concerning the Judge Would Question Special Counsels Motives...
But, only to Democrats and others involved in this persecution of the President.
Exactly.
>> although some seem to be non-germane <<
So Manafort’s 2006 work in Ukraine is germane to the 2016 election. How dat?
They won’t show the judge the order giving them authority to bring the charges. They are basically saying, ‘Just trust us.’
Typical.
Schiff is partially correct on this. The judge could easily have questioned Mueller’s motives in a strictly legal context. Once the judge made specific allegations about Mueller’s motives he was operating in a political realm, not a legal one — and really undermined himself in the process.
Time to indict MUELLER!
Can’t have a judge upholding the law, and, you know, JUSTICE.
I have had enough. When is this traitorous and degenerate POS going to be wearing handcuffs?
Why are they still roaming free blabbering ass covering lies?
So Schiff is saying it is improper for the Judge to question the motives of the Special Counsel (SC) while the SC is literally questioning the motives the President.
Haven’t heard much from Schiff lately. It seems that he’s been keeping a low profile. Now he decides to open his yap. (It was nice while it lasted.)
Political is precisely the realm of Mueller, not legal.
Millions including this judge are on to it. It’s so obvious. The Emperor Mueller has no clothes. People including the judge should not be so afraid of speaking truth to illegitimate power.
The judge will rule on legal matters.
But he will be CALLED political, merely because he said, let me see your authority, Mr. Mueller, for what you are trying to do in my court. Because even now it looks to me like you’re grasping authority you don’t have.
He has Mueller by the short hairs because he was so plain spoken and blunt in a common sense way.
Now, he WILL go legal on Mueller.
.
“They wont show the judge the order giving them authority to bring the charges.”
Well, they couldn’t possibly, as the order was “super-secret and verbal”. Isn’t that the American way now?
