The racism at the rink
Minnesota Public Radio News ^ | May 10, 2018 | by Bob Collins

Hockey is a sport played mostly by white people, and that’s just the way too many hockey fans want to keep it.

As more African Americans move into professional hockey, they provide a barometer of just how rooted in racism the sport still is.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Ontario Hockey League’s boss was so concerned about threats against a black player during a playoff series that he requested a police escort to help get Givani Smith of the Kitchener Rangers to a playoff game, the New York Times reports.

Smith, a draftee of the Detroit Red Wings, had scored the winning goal in overtime in game six of a playoff series and then gestured toward the opponent’s bench. He was suspended for the rest of the series.

What led to his outburst? Take a guess.

“I saw some of the stuff that was being sent in, and it was threatening in nature, and you could perceive it as death threats if you wanted to, and obviously the racial stuff as well,” said Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie.

Yeah, obviously.

“A lot of players of color go through this,” Smith’s agent, G. P. Daniele, lamented. “It’s almost par for the course. It’s unfortunate.”

The local newspaper said Smith had been subject to racial taunts throughout the series.

“He took a lot of abuse on the ice,” said Jay McKee, his coach. “I saw him get cross-checked, tripped, slashed and take high sticks. He only drew one (penalty) call throughout the playoffs.”

“At this time, Givani respectfully asks for privacy, as he and his family wish to move on from the incident. His focus is now on being a Detroit Red Wing,” a family spokesman said.

The NFL and the NBA both have not one female player. Methinks we should make some big loud protests

Liberals can FOAD. They provide nothing useful to society and just cause trouble because that is who they are.

A few years ago, after Joel Ward scored the winning goal for the Capitals in Game 7 of a playoff series in Boston, the racism of the Bruins fans was on full display - that night, at the arena, and then also for a full week or more afterward the game was over.

Such behavior was not surprising, though, since the most racist people in the entire country live in Boston, Massachusetts (at least in my experience).

I honestly do not think racism is rampant in the NHL. I am sure it is present in some areas of the country (mostly in the north) but it is not everywhere.

Another absurd article from an self-loathing white guilter.

There's a mini hockey stick in my basement signed by Kevin Weeks from 20+ years ago when he was on our town's minor league.

He was my kid's favorite player.

I would say Boston and the east coast cities from DC to Portland. Yet they are the ones foisting “racism” on the rest of us. Their racism is a worse kind then found in the south. In the east the libs get to live separately with no interaction with most minorities but especially blacks. But then they get to live separately from the white trash too.

In the south (from Virginia down, and westward to Alabama) blacks and whites have been living in close proximity to each other for more than a century-and-a-half.

Hard-core, hate-filled, dyed-in-the-wool racists - the kind who would threaten a black athlete for scoring against "their" team - are actually quite rare down this way; and they have been for 40 years or so.

I’ll wager I am just as or more widely traveled as you folks are, and it is my impression that people are largely similar in many ways no matter where you go.

Including Boston.

Years ago we used to make up names for black hockey players.

Leroy Roy, pronounced Le-Wah Wah was the winner followed closely by Bitchesand Orr.

Some areas are more similar than others. The north east coast stands out for its racism and hypocrisy about racism.

When people from the South insist everyone is more racist than they are, even if they never spent a single night in an area, never mind living there and interacting with people, it sounds too much like they are saying “WE’RE NOT RACIST! WE’RE NOT RACIST! WE’RE NOT RACIST!”

Look.

Not everyone up North thinks everyone in the South is racist. They don’t.

Sure, the do have those up here who think that way.

And there are those down there who think the opposite.

And it is my experience, having been born in the South and lived in the South, as well as living in the North, that...Southerners aren’t any more racist than anyone else.

Sure. The South has racist people, so does the North. And the Midwest. And the West. And the Southwest. And Hawaii. And Alaska.

There are good and bad people everywhere. I know. I’ve seen it.

As for PK Subban, the fellow another poster mentioned...I have seen him play. I played hockey for many years, and went to a number of games, including games that Subban played in.

People didn’t yell at him from the crowd or hate him because he was black, although I am sure there were those. They are everywhere. They yelled at him from the crowd and hated him because he played for the Montreal Canadians, legacy of a rivalry.

There are a lot of people who subscribe to your sentiments, and it just isn’t so. It becomes an echo chamber, where one person says it, other people chime in agreeing, and everyone agrees, but most have them have usually never spent more time in the areas than it took to change planes in an airport.

And by the way, this is nothing personal against you. I have read your posts on FR, and I respect your opinion.

I just get tired of hearing that particular slander, just like I am sure folks down in the South get tired of hearing that slander.
