Oregon school district forced LGBTQ student to read Bible as punishment: report

An Oregon school district reportedly forced an LGBTQ student to read passages from the Bible as a form of punishment

The World in Coos Bay, Ore., reports that the student's allegations were detailed by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) in a March 6 letter to North Bend School District Superintendent Bill Yester.

The ODE is investigating claims that an LGBTQ high school student was forced by a school administrator to read the Bible while they were being “disciplined,” according to The World.

It reported that ODE officials are investigating whether the forced Bible reading violated the student's First Amendment rights, including the Establishment Clause which recognizes the separation of church and state.

The district, about 200 miles south of Portland, initially denied the allegation, but the administrator ultimately admitted it in an interview with the ODE, The World reported. On a separate occasion, a different teacher reportedly equated same-sex marriage to marrying a dog during a lesson.

“There is substantial evidence to support the allegation that the district subjected LGBTQ students to separate or different rules of behavior, sanctions, or other treatment,” the department's letter reads.

The ODE is investigating the district’s alleged failure to “remedy a hostile environment after complaints had been made by LGBTQ students," including failing to investigate other claims of sexual harassment.

The district was encouraged to reach a settlement with an unidentified student within 30 days of receiving the letter but that reportedly has not happened, The World reported.

The school board will meet with state officials later this month to decide if it is in compliance with Oregon and U.S. anti-discrimination laws, it added.

In cases like this, sometimes I wonder who was smaller.

It depends on the attitude in which it is presented.

It depends on the attitude in which it is presented.

(Presenting the bible in the wrong attitude is a subtle form of lying.)

...whether the forced Bible reading violated the student's First Amendment rights...

What if they want to bring one in to read between classes?

Well, to add more perspective to the my story, when I called in to say I would never drive him again because of his cursing and other things he did, they said “Oh, no, you were the last driver (out of 20) who would transport him! The other gave their notices on him a long time ago!”

Not that I care that you think he was a bigger man than me, but seesh.

This latter thing should be fine; it’s voluntary.

Christianity has had difficulty grasping its New Testament place with respect to worldly governments (prior to Christ’s return, of course). And as long as schools remain government organs, this is going to be an inherent problem.

Not that the bible is wrong, or bad, but that it’s not something we want worldly governments to be trying to minister to people. Such ministry tends to decay into self righteous acts of entities that are more Christianized than actually Christian. And it can complicate the efforts of evangelists.

Well, here is where you had a chance to be bigger and not self righteous. And blew it.

God sure cares even if you don’t give a hoot.

As a Christian, I don’t want kids forced to read any religious literature. If kids want to read it, fine. I think a place should be made available for kids to hold Christian service at school, for people who volunteer to participate. Then again, if I support that, I have to accept the followers of Islam being provided a space too.

They’ve sure corrupted our nation.

“Oregon school district forced LGBTQ student to read Bible as punishment: report”

That would be cruel and unusual punishment for me too.

Maybe he/she/it might have learned something for reading the Good Book called the Bible.

As a track coach, my dad didn’t appreciate when phy ed teachers would use running as a punishment.

As an English teacher, our neighbor didn’t appreciate other treachery using writing as a punishment.

I see this through the same lense. As a Christian, I don’t appreciate using the precious and holy word of God as a punishment.

I’d be willing to bet that the administrator who used the Bible as a punishment doesn’t revere it-they are probably as scornful of it as the LGBTXYZ student.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Read the Bible as literature?

Never a problem, not even in libtardistan.

So assign he/she/it (sounds best if slurred together) to read Romans 1 and critique the run-on sentences.

Something smells here. Something is missing from this story. I’m not buying it until more information comes out.

Was the teacher a looking to influence the students b/c the teacher was a true Christian? If so, why would the teacher consider it a punishment—b/c the students were gay? Really?

Was the teacher indifferent about religion but actually wanted to punish them by making them read substantially long complex scripture?
