Lol...did the bad Russian man scare you again princess?
I didn’t know that. King Salmon was considered the control center for the southern part of Alaska so the facilities where in good shape and they had just built new dorms. One thing I remember was we had only one TV station and that was the Air Force Network, there was no arguing over the channels. That was my last year in the Air Force I thought I had escaped a remote assignment...lol I was stationed at Houston for about 2 years before they closed the location down and sent me to Tyndale AFB. Houston was a manual station and Tyndale a Sage system. Anyhow the Air Force made me grow up. Good experience. I was in between 1976-80
You literally replaced me, I was in 73-76. I got let out early during the big military wind downs after Viet Nam. I spend almost two years at Caswell AFS in northern Maine (only American Dew Radar site under Canadian control at the time) and then my year (53 weeks) in Cold Bay. Scope doping in both places. My highlight being in Cold Bay was reporting on eruption activities of Pavlof and Shishaldin volcanoes to the Smithsonian and sending the Smithsonian colorful (orange and green) sea snail shells and other shells I found around the Bering sea shore. They said my stuff was the first specimens from that part of Alaska they had in over 100 years. Fun stuff.
They flew by here (King Salmon, AK) on the way back to Elmendorf.
King Salmon is currently unusable as they took the arresting barriers out last year. Contractors are still keeping the base in “Warm Storage” and rumors are the AF may move back in here once the runway is resurfaced.
I’m working at the National Weather Service but we’ll be closing soon.
Do they still have the radar working there? I had heard that just about everything in Alaska that was radar connected is now run by civilians and the signals piped into NORAD in Colorado.
Yes, there is still a radar working right in the middle of the housing area. When I lived over there is messed with the satellite TV. I’m not sure what it’s purpose is. There are no scope dopes employed on the base.
Love the pic of the flag. Still snows like that on occasion in the winter.
