There were no French listed, so why ask to be excused?
I think it's because Bethune-Cookman is a historically black college. Although most of the students are black, this doesn't mean Bethune-Cookman bans white people from attending.
If you want to win at basketball, you will probably end up recruiting some black people to your college. If you want to win the golf championship, you will probably end up recruiting some white people. I don't see the problem here (other than the racism of having a "blacks only" golf competition in the first place).

Isn’t this the start of a joke: “ two Swedes, an Irishman, and a Canadian....?”
This is where Boobie Clark played football as a lineman except for one game at Fullback. Paul Brown, coach of the Bengals, saw the film of that game and drafted him in the twelfth round.
“Despite inexperience at the position, he was a breakout star with 988 yards in 254 carries (a 3.9 average) and eight touchdowns and 45 receptions for 347 yards (a 7.7 average). He was named American Football Conference Rookie of the Year in 1973.” Quoting Wiki here. I remember watching him play about 6 seasons for the Bengals and he was AFC rookie of the year. I hope their golf team has many successes.
