Maersk is huge.

“would honour customer agreements entered into before May 8th”, means no new shipments are being booked from today onward - so no new payments are being made.

Their supply chain, and their current flow of funds, is already crashing. Every sector of their economy will have to start scrambling for supplies - and paying huge premiums for whatever they can get.

Iran (like Venezuela) is highly dependent on imports for a wide range of products (drugs, parts, even foods). Their imports are highly concentrated though a single container port at Bandar Abbas (also their main Naval Base). If Bandar Abbas happens to get destroyed in the coming months, no shipping line will want their valuable ships lost with it.

Beyond that risk, there is the certainty of huge losses in fines from the US - that means that Maersk will not be alone in halting shipments. No big shipping company can afford to keep supplying Iran.

The best solution for Iranians is to quickly throttle the mullahs, and cut a new deal.

Free Iran!

A Maersk subsidiary is a major contractor to the US military Sealift command. The man who built up the company had a US mother.

Not so fast guys, from a few years back...

Shipping company pays US$3.1 million settlement to OFAC for alleged violations of Iran and Sudan sanctions programs

And, IIRC, this wasn't the only time, and not just with these countries.

Yeah, well it almost seems like half the cargo on US railroads is Maersk shipping containers. The USA could put a hurting on their bottom line pretty fast.
