The number of Hollywood films featuring LGBTQ characters plummeted nearly 40 percent in 2017 compared to the year prior, an annual survey of the major movie studios by GLAAD said on Tuesday.
The group found that just 14 wide releases from the majors, as well as offerings from their indie divisions, were inclusive of queer identities in 2017, a drop from 23 films in 2016.
Only 12.8 percent of studio films contained characters who identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or queer the lowest percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive major studio releases since GLAAD began tracking in 2012.
Trans characters were absent entirely from wide releases (though the report does contain praise for the Oscar-winning trans story A Fantastic Woman, released by Sony Pictures Classics).
On screen, record-breaking films like Black Panther and Wonder Woman prove that not only does inclusion make for great stories inclusion is good for the bottom line. It is time for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories to be included in this conversation and in this movement, said GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a fiery introduction the survey, called the Studio Responsibility Index (SRI).
Now in its sixth year, the SRI applies a secondary test to the films that rate as inclusive. Called the Vito Russo Test, its a set of parameters that vets a given film for the quality of its depiction of queer people (often in mainstream commercial fare, gay people are used as punchlines or provoke anxiety in straight characters).
Universal Pictures got the highest score of any studio, but was still labeled insufficient, by the SRI. Of fourteen wide releases. four of the studios films made the grade. The highest praise was for Jordan Peeles Get Out.
Its a blink-and-miss moment, but theres a revelation that Allison Williams character Rose also recruited at least one woman (Betty Gabriel) to bring home to her family, who conduct a sinister procedure that implants the brains of white people into able black bodies.
The films presentation of the photo seems to be in line with the reveal of other love interests that Rose has brought home, the study found. It wasnt necessarily thrilled with the fate that awaited Gabriels character which happens often with queer women in scripted content.
Behind Universal was 20th Century Fox (whose touching coming-out movie Love, Simon was released in 2018 and did not count for this survey) which merited inclusion for a gay male couple in Alien: Covenant and the creative and crucial deployment of Elton John in the plot of Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Fox was dinged for a portrayal of platonic female friendship in Amy Schumers Snatched.
Paramount received a poor rating, with just two inclusive films (Ruby Roses character in XxX: The Return of Xander Cage being one), along with Lionsgate.
Disneys eponymous label and portfolio studios Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar tied for last place with Sony Pictures with both studios only releasing one inclusive film and both earning a poor rating.
There was a small silver lining while depictions of queer people are still overwhelmingly stories of gay men, people of color counted for 57 percent of those characters last year. None among them were Asian or Pacific Islander, however.
Ellis and leadership from GLAAD hosted a breakfast at the Beverly Hills offices of agency WME on Tuesday morning, where they presented the SRI to industry players. Lena Waithe and TK sat for a panel discussion afterwards to discuss how Hollywood can increase quality representation in film.
I’ve been done with movies for 20 years and am fast doing the same with tv. Seems every show has to have some LGBT storyline. One would have thought HGTV would be safe to watch but that’s turned into HomoGayTV as has the Foodnetwork.
Meaning the percentage was closer to 20% from 2012-2016... rather surprising hyper-representation for a group that comprises only 3% of the population (recently claimed to be ~5%, but that's mostly from kids being taught to glorify any same-sex activity, and thus claiming LGBT status so that they can enjoy the parades and the Virtue Signaling).
I wonder if it ever occurred to the author of this piece that women might not be receptive to a message that they cannot befriend another woman unless it is in the context of a perverted sexual relationship?
Our local movie theater has reduced the prices of movies to less than $5 for a matinée. That suggests to me that movies are not as popular these days. Maybe people are tired of having leftist propaganda shoved down their throats in the guise of entertainment.
Although the movie Avengers seems to say that radical environmentalists can turn into mass murdering lunatics, with the Thanoss character. And thats probably an accurate message.
People aren’t watching that crap. I turn it off if I see it on TV. Like the NFL, Hollywood will only learn by a loss of revenue.
The addition of homos to movies has been going on for over 45-50 years as I remember “Sissies”, as a critic called them, added for comic relief.
POINT BLANK (two in an apartment)
The FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS. (vampire’s son)
Barbarella (voice only)
THE AMBUSHERS (the hairdresser)
THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN (two gay inmates and a sadistic prison guard)
SHARK’S TREASURE(Prison escapee and lover)
I have not been to a movie in years, and never watch such trash on TV.
It’s called “Enlightened Self Interest.” Any questions?
They added one to Deadpool2 which added nothing to the story.
I was shocked how much I liked DP1 and how much they broke DP2 with non-stop CGI nonsense.
Time to turn to “talk radio”
I have tuned out TLC’s Lost In Transition.
When I saw it was about trannies, I lost interest.
They keep pushing this crap on us Normals.
And we’re telling liberals “no.” When it hits Hollywood’s bottom line, they will get the message.
We’re not buying their alternative lifestyle crap as something that should go mainstream.
“They added one to Deadpool2 which added nothing to the story.”
I’m hearing its being touted as the first superhero movie to feature gay characters. Which is false.
Power Rangers and Watchmen.
Hollywood ain’t “straight”, but the viewing audience (customer base) IS. How many straights would pay money to watch a gay-themed flick??
The moron postulating this problem ought to examine the audience response success rate of “gay” flicks that have been previously released.
Way to go...enough of the soft indoctrination tactics...they want to normalize their sad lifestyle..
And you are not alone. I get so tired of seeing this stuff.
I can proudly say I have never watched a single episode of this series.
I would never have known the sick crap existed if it weren’t on constantly at a relative’s house I was staying a few years ago. Their kids apparently loved it. I stopped watching pop TV several decades ago, the last “new” series I remember watching and liking was Taxi. Now I mostly only watch documentaries, news and sports.
Aside from the obvious promotion of degeneracy, the show is not the least bit funny. Yet it’s apparently one of the most popular sitcoms of the past 10 or so years. Couldn’t believe that when I first heard it.
Subhuman characters don’t sell well gee gosh who knew.
