McConnell: 'Realistic Assessment' Senate Is in Play
Newsmax ^ | 26 May 2018 | Solange Reyner

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell during an interview with Politico said there was a “realistic assessment” that the Senate landscape was in play during the upcoming midterm elections and poked fun at his campaign account's Narcos-inspired tweet aimed at Don Blankenship following the ex-convict's loss in the West Virginia primary.

“It’s very much in play. If you look at history, it’s pretty clear that two years into any new administration is dicey territory for the party of the president. I don’t think this year will be any different. The wind is going to be in our face,” McConnell said. “We have three vulnerabilities: Arizona, Nevada and Tennessee.”

The traditional logic that says the President’s party loses seats in the mid-term makes sense when the President has a party. These guys with the “R” after their name do not appear to be in the same party as President Trump, so new logic needs to be applied to old traditions.

I think you guys are getting too literal and personal about this.

McConnell is for Mitch, and for the Chao family. But, RINO or not, he’s not as much good to either himself or the Chao family without a majority. His inclination is GOPe, but if the power consolidates with Trump, he’ll play along.

I think he’s just playing down the latest positive polls, not spiking the ball. He’s going to love having a bigger majority.

That said, he’s an A-hole of the first order. Elaine likes him because he’s a powerful Senator.

America is presently governed by the Senate.

The House of Representatives is of no value what so ever.

The Senate Rules must be changed to eliminate the 60 vote rule on all legislation. The rule has destroyed governance.

They had the real chance of picking up at least 6 Senate seats.
When you have a fool as a leader, all you get is foolish decisions.

The only reason ANYTHING is in “play” is because of quisling rino’s.

If these quisling cowards United behind Trump and His Trade and Immigration plans, the Republicans would have a Clean Sweep and most likely control 2/3 rds of each house as a result.

You are right. Although batty, if Pelosi had only 1 other Democrat member in the House with her she would say they are taking it back over. Mitch could be ahead 55-45 and act like he is behind. If any Conservative is running he will make sure we get behind.

You overlook a vital point.

The GOPe Senators were elected because the voters preferred them. That is, there is not a purely conservative Senate because that is what the voters want.

Tennessee was mentioned as being in play. Being from a solid conservative Tennessee district I have witnessed several times a good conservative candidate being mauled by the moderate Republican majority. We can only hope that the Trump effect will carry Marsha Blackburn to winning

Further, although excuses are made over and over, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore before her won the popular vote. There are more of them than there are of us.

He is inculcating defeatism amongst Republicans because he wants Democrats to win.

Cruz would be ideal. Rand Paul. A few others.

More likely, Mitch could be faced with 59 or 60 senators and may have trouble making excuses.

"Democrats are defending ten seats in states won by Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, while Republicans are only defending one seat in a state won by Hillary Clinton in 2016."

Yes, it is true. The Senate is very much in play. But the Republicans only have nominal control, not effective control, right now. Any legislation or appointment can be stopped by a John McCain or Jeff Flake. Wouldn't be possible if the Republicans close in on 60 seats.

The only way the senate remotely gets into play is if republican turnout is abysmal nationally

Fhios has a great idea to counter the prospect of low turnout.

TN and AZ did not end up with two Amnesty Senators by accident.
Our elections have been manipulated to elect Bush League Republicans since they took over the RNC in 1988.
Kneecapping conservatives to protect the Cheap Labor Express is what has been going on.

You make an excellent point. Just look at the dripping hatred McCain has for not only the President but for the 65 million who voted for the President.

I have posted for years that McCain is elected by democrat crossovers in the GOP primaries and that in the general, the AZ electorate has nowhere else to go, so McCain sails in.

AZ is a red state, I can’t believe they would willingly elect this maniac to the US Senate over and over unless there was no one else to vote for. Having democrats crossover and vote for McCain in the GOP primary ensures there is no one else to vote for in the general.

That is the favored tactic of Bush League Republicans to block the citizens from having any choice about their country being flooded with foreigners.

No disagreement overall, but I’ve got a theory and tell me what you think: he had polio when he was 2. That I can tell from Wilipedia, no siblings. Enlisted in the army reserve in 1967 but honorably discharged in less than a year for medical reasons. Married 1968 divorced 1980. ages of three kids not stated, but the oldest no more than 10 or 11. Rise to prominence when the Republicans were a thoroughly cowed minority.Amount of contact with them not clear. So , he wasn’t an athlete, he wasn’t a soldier, exposure to his own kids playing sports not clear, and he was led by Vichy Republicans.
It doesn’t look like this joker was ever exposed to a leader who would say Damn the odds, we’re going to win!” In other words, never trained to strive for victory. Hence, his prediction the day after the 2006 electoral loss that it looked like we were going to become just a regional party. All that said, he’s also an a-hole, I just don’t think he has any winning skill set.
