Border wall construction underway in South San Diego County

Construction started Friday on the US-Mexico border wall project at ...San Diego County.

The work will replace about 14 miles of scrap metal wall that stands up to 10 feet high with a wall between 18 and 30 feet tall. The new wall will also have an anti-climbing plate.

Crews will build the wall starting half a mile from the Pacific Ocean, east to the bottom of Otay Mountain in East County.

“I liked the design where the top was wider than the wall, and rounded.”

So did President Trump. That, and the see-through feature were his only publicized comment on specific designs when he visited the prototypes. Apparently, they performed well in the testing. Maybe next year, we will start to see some of that barrel top installed.

“That’s not so much border wall construction as border wall improvements or repair.”

The approach guiding President Trump’s program, is prioritizing the areas of highest traffic first (usually the urban areas). In most cases, there is already some kind of barrier - just too easy for pedestrians to get through.

Even though it may be “improvements” or “repair” rather than new wall, it is still the most effective place to reduce illegal immigration. They are also the most important places to have the new solid, durable barrier, in case Democrats come into power, and leave it to be ripped open by vandals. The heavy new bollard-style barrier will stop a speeding dump truck.

33 miles of new barrier was funded in the last budget for the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, around McAllen. That is the single area of the border with the highest rate of illegal entry. They are currently in the contracting process. It should be awarded/start work in the next few months. That will be the biggest impact of this year’s barrier building, by far.

The 33 miles of new barrier will fill the gaps in the existing barrier around there, so when its done (about two years) it will actually be a larger stretch, and significantly divert flows.

If President Trump only receives the $1.6 billion per year that he got added to the ten year budget baseline this year, he will basically button up the big urban areas, and divert immigrant/smuggling flows into smaller towns and difficult rural treks during his first term. But reports have come out that they intend to raise the baseline to around $2.5 billion per year in the next budget, and have a few different approaches working to get significantly more money up front. If so, we could see a big ramp up next year.

So far, they are using a 4 to 6 foot flat plate at the top, which affords no handhold. This year's appropriation limits construction to previously used designs. Next year they might start putting the barrel tops on them, which are even harder to climb, and also defeat grappling hooks.

Bbbbbut, the media the Democrats say we are not being invaded.

Why aren’t the top sections welded together? That’s reinforcing strength if they get a large enough, heavy enough vehicle to ram it.

Communism, corruption, and cartels.

"Why aren’t the top sections welded together?"

It is a lower cost construction technique, to just stand up the panels, and set them in the concrete foundation, without first joining them together (like welding). It is especially easier on sloping/uneven terrain.

One of the prototypes built last year, is a super-bollard design. Very heavy steel with anti-corrosion treatment, in a very solid foundation, joined for a continuously smooth no-grip, extra-large anti-climb barrel top. It was the most expensive design of the eight.

30 Feet tall. Just forget about climbing over this monster.

I can surely understand your disappointment in progress. I think even he was stunned at the depth of opposition and deep hatred for him and his agenda. He has been under assault from every corner but a handful of true conservatives and the American People. I see complete sincerity and passion for moving forward at lightning speed unlike any other official in my lifetime. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how it all turns out.
