They hate Trump and the Left is loaded to bear to vote out Republicans.

Looks like a Blue Wave but then again CA is already Deep Blue...

Republicans should convert to democrats in CA, and run at least 10 candidates in each primary. After winning the election, wait a few months and then convert back to republican.

It’s done as it was intended to do. Turned California into a de facto one party state - the party that set up the “top two” non-primary system.

The uniparty did not like that you did not have to be one of them to get your name on the ballot, provided those registered to your party voted to nominate you for the general election. The GOP use to when more elections, even when they were already outnumbered by democrats, because they were an alternate voice and not an echo. That chance was eroded away (as was intended) by the “top two” system.

Another example of “California’s populist” system.

Now that RATS are not guaranteed both spots, they are a problem.

The conservative Democrats who used to dominate state politics until the end of 1980s were replaced by liberal Democrats.

And the white share of the electorate kept dwindling. It was the perfect storm.

CA is the mirror image of TX.

Go to the comments there and ask who put this lousy system in place.

A stupid plan for an election process. Minneapolis uses a similar plan to elect their mayor and it is a disaster. Of course, most of the city is wildly liberal, so what other outcome could be expected?

Runoffs. First one to get more than 50% wins.

Notice Slate avoids saying who is responsible for this situation. It just sort of happened somehow.

The system wasn’t a problem until now, when it suddenly might help Republicans.

If the Democrats had a lock this article wouldn’t be written.

Exactly - we have had this for three cycles with nary a peep (other than from conservatives who of course are completely ignored).

This primary system will destroy the Republican party unless it gets its act together. To counter it, they need to have a party convention at which they select the Republican nominee. Anyone who doesn’t respect the process, and runs in the primary even though they lost at the convention, is kicked out of the party and cannot claim to be a Republican any more. Then, when people look at the list of candidates on the ballot, there will only be one Republican.

I think I read that Utah does something like this.

If Democrats don’t make the top 2 list, they will sue to be put on the ballot. A liberal judge will allow it. Democrats will never need to follow the rules. Rules are for everyone else.

Article is garbage. Parties still participate and VERY unlikely 2 Rs will win a Dem district LOL!

There actually are a couple of congressional districts where so many dems are running that the two republicans could be the top vote getters. Those are purple trending blue districts.

The dem party has pushed lesser dem candidates to withdraw but they are still on the ballot. So the dems are running ads in those places to tell their drone voters which of the dem candidates not to vote for. Weird but true!

Yeah. “Don’t vote for this Dem, vote for that Dem!”
I think their voters will obey.

If Republicans were smart enough they could take over the top two spots. Infiltrate the Dem party.

Welcome to my world where conservative voters are disenfranchised in many races because the only choice is a libtard and a communist.

Big deal. Californians have proven they’ll vote for a leftist every time, anyway. A Republican running is a waste of conservative money.

the “top-two” system is supposed to circumvent party primaries on both sides to produce Democrats and Republican who appeal to the broad electorate.

Just to be sure I did a quick check of the U.S. Constitution and I just can not find any reference suggesting the requirement that candidates for office have any type of appeal to the electorate!
