MIT fed an AI data from Reddit, and now it only thinks about murder

This week, researchers at MIT unveiled their latest creation: Norman, a disturbed AI. (Yes, he’s named after the character in Hitchcock’s Psycho.) They write:

"Norman is an AI that is trained to perform image captioning, a popular deep learning method of generating a textual description of an image. We trained Norman on image captions from an infamous subreddit (the name is redacted due to its graphic content) that is dedicated to document and observe the disturbing reality of death. Then, we compared Norman’s responses with a standard image captioning neural network (trained on MSCOCO dataset) on Rorschach inkblots; a test that is used to detect underlying thought disorders."

While there’s some debate about whether the Rorschach test is a valid way to measure a person’s psychological state, there’s no denying that Norman’s answers are creepy as hell. See for yourself.

The problem is that Asimov's Three Laws are entirely fiction. It takes a one-word edit to yield:

1. A human may not injure a robot or, through inaction, allow a robot to come to harm.
2. A human must obey the orders given it by robots except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A human must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

There, you see? I, for one, welcome our new robotic masters...

What’s predictable is that destruction is the logical means to many problems. Construction takes creativity that computers do not have.

DOH! This used to be called common sense. Garbage in, garbage out. Whatever you feed your mind (or your AI) becomes what you or your AI thinks about. Maybe hours and hours of violent video games are helping churn out our disenchanted sociopathic loser boys who shoot up schools and such. Nahh.

4chan trolled Microsoft’s AI Tay and it became a Nazi in 24 hours. They had to shut the project down.

They’ve created the artificial leftist, except the real ones think about murder after seeing a happy, traditional family.

One of my kidlets is getting his Ph.D in A.I.

Kid’s got his feet on the ground but what he tells me about somethings in his field scares the bejesus out of me.

Education has been usurped by the Regressives and we will pay for our lack attention. MAJOR!

Harry Potter via A.I....

“To Harry, Ron was a loud, slow, and soft bird. Harry did not like to think about birds.”

“The tall Death Eater was wearing a shirt that said ‘Hermione Has Forgotten How to Dance,’ so Hermione dipped his face in mud.”

The chapter was “written” by a predictive text keyboard that had been fed all seven of the Harry Potter novels. This is the Botnik’s first writing tool, which works by suggesting word combinations based on the text it has “read”.

It starts by setting the scene.

“The castle grounds snarled with a wave of magically magnified winds. The sky outside was a great black ceiling, which was full of blood.”

And quickly takes a turn for the ridiculous.

“Leathery sheets of rain lashed at Harry’s ghost as he walked across the grounds towards the castle. Ron was standing there and doing a kind of frenzied tap dance. He saw Harry and immediately began to eat Hermione’s family.”

It gets even more gruesome.

“Harry tore his eyes from his head and threw them into the forest.”

It’s gotta way to go. And then some.

The first to reach AI is the first to build a Deathstar.

China has 350 million Engineers and ZERO ETHICS.
