It was the book that went into more detailed reasons for HAL’s behavior. Just going by the movie, I can see it being believed that it was the mission. After all, the success of the mission was the reason HAL gave for his behavior. But we also know he was capable of deception (the failure of the AE35 unit was faked by HAL).

And even in the movie we can see that HAL’s insistence that the success of the mission was dependent on his survival (of his higher level functions) was a lie.
