Canada Senate to Vote on Marijuana Legalization

The Senate vote on Bill C-45, commonly known as the Cannabis Act, was expected Thursday evening, ahead of a G7 summit of the leaders of the world's seven largest economies that was scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Charlevoix, Quebec. The legislation would legalize access to cannabis while controlling and regulating how it is grown, distributed and sold. Canadian regulators suggest that, if passed and signed into law, sales are likely to commence 10 to 12 weeks post-legalization.

Under the legislation, adults would be permitted to purchase up to 30 grams from distributors that have been licensed by the federal government.

The measure, which has already been passed by the House of Commons, would need to be approved in the lower chamber again because of amendments added to the Senate version. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who campaigned on a pledge to legalize the drug, has said he supported the bill, arguing it would impede young people from accessing marijuana.

Canada's marijuana industry is expected to generate more than $7 billion in sales annually, according to a new report by Deloitte, with $4.3 billion coming from recreational sales, $1.7 billion from medicinal sales and approximately $1 billion from the black market. Deloitte predicted total cannabis spend could surge by as much as 58 percent, with regular marijuana consumers increasing purchases by up to 22 percent under the new law.

It's estimated that by the year 2030, that by U.S. legal cannabis industry is expected to reach $75 billion in sales by 2030, according to research firm Cowen & Co. That’s almost as large as the North American carbonated soft drink market in 2017.

The more recreational drug production and sales, the less production and sales of useful items. It can ruin an economy. Many elite folks are happy with that paradigm along with anti-marriage laws and policies, though, because it keeps domestic business competition from rising and decreases population of European descent (which also keeps domestic competition from rising).

Why stop there? How "useful" is beer? Soda? Who "needs" a Harley-Davidson? Or a chia pet? The economy is not a zero sum game. That's the kind of thing leftists believe. In socialist countries they don't have all those non-useful consumer goods. They should be the most robust economies the world, right?
