The House voted along party lines late Thursday to pass a White House proposal that would claw back nearly $15 billion in previously approved government funding.

The House approved the measure in a vote of 210-206, with conservatives calling it a step in the right direction after they ripped into the price tag of the $1.3 trillion spending bill President Trump signed earlier this year

I can’t wait to see what McConnell/McCain is going to do with this...

Sounds like just enough to be the bill payer for the border wall.

Finding the money is the heavy lifting of the budget process.

15 billion to these jokers is like having a 10 bill in your wallet. Amazing how close the vote was to get even this little amount cut!

To quote the House Minority Leader, crumbs. When there are at least two zeroes after the number and before the “billion,” we will take notice.

I wonder if this bill would be subject to a filibuster under current senate rules? If not, it’s pure genius: use the promise of wasteful spending to get Democrats on board to pass the budget, then eliminate the same spending afterwards without them.

It’s not like they are in Congress to serve the public, the more money they spread around the more kickbacks they can pocket.

$15 billion is simply a PR campaign. In terms of substantive cutting of the budget, which is desperately needed, its nothing.

This action on a rescission request from the President is not subject to filibuster rules. Up or down majority vote. Once this passes on very obvious unneeded spending let’s hope other requests are made for some real money.

Yes it is. The congress is addicted to spending. That’s how we got into $21 TRILLION of debt (not counting another $113 TRILLION in unfunded liabilities).

Authorize $1.3 trillion and claw back $15 billion and you're calling that genius? Really? I would call it a joke.

We are seeing an economy that is doing the best it has done in decades. Unemployment is at record lows. Business profits have never been higher. And we're on course to run a $1 trillion plus deficit. In economic times like this deficits should be falling, not rising. These are times when you should be running a surplus because government revenues should be at their highest. Yet our deficit is expected be at Obama-levels. What will happen during the inevitable economic downturn? Deficits of $2 trillion? $3 trillion? Congress has to stop kicking the can down the road. We're approaching the end of it.

Total Receipts: Up by 2 Percent in the First Half of Fiscal Year 2018

Receipts totaled $1,499 billion during the first six months of fiscal year 2018, CBO estimates—$26 billion more than during the same period last year. That increase resulted from changes in receipts from the following sources:

No, the bill is not subject to filibuster. Only majority required.

**************

This was disingenuous, but politically clever. It allows the same people who voted for massive spending that funded virtually every Democrat priority to go back to their angry constituents and piously claim they voted to cut government spending. And it will work. The voters are generally clueless and naive.

That’s how congress operates; they use tricks like this to enable the reps to vote both ways on every issue. Congress is good at lying and PR campaigns to make themselves look good.

How much higher would receipts be without the tax cut? And how much higher is spending compared to the same period last year?

The question is, how much higher will they be after the economy adjusts to the lower taxes and we see significant growth from the tax cuts providing even higher tax revenues.

It’s far too small a win, but at least it’s a win.
