New leak indictment spells disaster for McCabe
The Hill ^ | 10 June 18 | Jonathan Turley

Posted on 06/10/2018 4:01:18 AM PDT by SkyPilot

The indictment of James Wolfe, 58, former security director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI), has sent shockwaves around Washington. Wolfe faces three counts of violating 18 U.S.C. 1001, for making false statements to criminal investigators, and could easily face serious jail time if convicted. After a year of leaks cascading down Capitol Hill, Wolfe is a cautionary tale for many members, staffers and journalists. Yet, one person should be especially discomforted by the indictment: former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe

The Wolfe indictment shows the Justice Department has been actively pursuing leaks out of Congress. Given the lack of prior action, members and staffers may have become emboldened over time, but it now appears the Trump administration has been quietly tracking down the source of some news articles. Wolfe was an obvious concern for any allegations of leaks, given his work at the SSCI for three decades, from 1987 to 2017.

In his capacity, the most sensitive material passed over his desk from the executive branch to the committee. The Justice Department alleges that he “lied to FBI agents in December 2017 about his repeated contacts with three reporters, including through his use of encrypted messaging applications. Wolfe is further alleged to have made false statements to the FBI about providing two reporters with nonpublic information related to the matters occurring before the SSCI.”

The alleged disclosure in this case has proven far more salacious than expected. Wolfe reportedly had an intimate three-year relationship with Ali Watkins, a reporter for the New York Times. The relationship reportedly occurred when Watkins worked for BuzzFeed. It raises ethical issues on the relationship of sources and reporters, but a greater concern is raised by the targeting of a journalist by the FBI.

For those who are unfamiliar with Professor Jonathan Turley, he is a liberal, but a very honest liberal. He was one of the few who told the truth about Bill Clinton during the 1990s.

McCabe's goose is cooked. He is in big, BIG trouble:

The only person who should be more worried than staffers and journalists by the Wolfe charges is McCabe. He is already embroiled as the subject of a referral by the Justice Department inspector general for possible criminal prosecution. This referral by career Justice Department officials is based on their finding that McCabe knowingly lied to investigators about leaking information to the media. It was bad enough for McCabe that he was involved in the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was charged with the same violation of 18 U.S.C. 1001 for lying to investigators. Now, Wolfe is charged under the same provision for a leak to the media. For McCabe not to be charged would lead to a torrent of criticism over the failure of the Justice Department to apply the same standards to its own lawyers.

If he is not now cooperating with authorities, he better start. He may be faced with spending many years in a Federal prison. As a former Deputy Director of the FBI, his life (even at a minimum security prison) will not be pleasant.

With the false statement situation...I don’t see how he avoids a court visit. If you made just one single statement and it was just one single line that a fraud...you might skate through the court business. In his case, you could be talking about a year in prison as a minimum. And this will trigger people to go and review other statements that he made....looking for other false stories. It just gets you deeper into a mess.

Ping to LS, who's been telling us to sit tight, don't get your Sessions' knickers in a twist because it's likely....

the Justice Department has been actively pursuing leaks out of Congress. Given the lack of prior action, members and staffers may have become emboldened over time, but it now appears the Trump administration has been quietly tracking down the source of some news articles.

...for a LONG time.

Got to suck to be McCabe. At least Wolfe got 3 years of very young tail out of it. I’m not sure McCabe got anything.

I used to be a Sessions critic, but many months ago, several Freepers convinced me otherwise.

I believe Sessions is diligently, and methodically, putting the pieces into place to take these people down.

I am not sure if the FBI (in its present form) can survive this scandal.

The highest ranks of the FBI help lead an attempted coup d'etat against a duly elected President of the United States, and they may have even plotted to harm him and to harm members of his family.

She is 26 now, which means she was only 23 or 24 when she starting prostituting herself for leaks of classified information.

I’m not sure McCabe got anything.

His wife Jill got $640,000 from the Democrats.

Young reporter in leak investigation enjoyed meteoric rise in Washington journalism

Imagine that.

I wonder if the NY Slimes paid for her lingerie and condoms.

As for James Wolfe, he is a traitorous scumbag.

I vote for 30 years, in at least a medium security Federal prison.

Despite media accounts, McCabe did not lose his pension. A portion of his pension may be less, but he still has it.

He may have bigger problems than leaks and lies.

Correct - McCabe manipulated the FBI Form 302s.

That alone should get him 25 years.

Creepy how much Wolfe’s “journalist” looks like McCabes’s daughter in that picture.

Even younger...some sources are saying that she began ‘her work’ in 2013, which means at 21 years old.

It sure didn’t take her long to learn how to ‘work a source’ in DC.

“Despite media accounts, McCabe did not lose his pension. A portion of his pension may be less, but he still has it.”

My understanding is that he lost about 1/3 of what it would have been if he was able to retire a week later. I believe he also lost retirement medical coverage, since he didn’t actually retire.

Agree, I wouldn’t put anything past that DC bunch.
