Tapper on North Korea summit: 'It's not as if other presidents couldn't have done this'
The Hill ^ | 06/12/2018 | Joe Concha

CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday weighed in on the Trump-Kim summit arguing that other presidents did not meet with North Korean leaders to avoid giving their dictatorships “prestige.”

“It's not as if other presidents couldn't have done this,” Tapper said of Trump's historic meeting with the North Korean leader. “It's that they didn't want to.”

Tapper, the host of CNN shows “The Lead” and “State of the Union,” prefaced his comments that past presidents decided not to meet for direct talks with North Korea because “the concern was, you don't want to give North Korea that kind of prestige.”

“You don't want to elevate them without having something guaranteed in terms of what they are actually willing to do, in terms of denuclearization, in terms of what Secretary of State Pompeo constantly refers to as ‘irreversible and verifiable denuclearization.’ ”

Tapper's comments come after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday announced an agreement committing the U.S. to undesignated “security guarantees” in exchange for North Korea denuclearization.

I *LOVE* that Tapper et. al. are doing stuff like this.

It undermines their credibility more and more.

Obama could have done it, but not for the same reasons.

Hey Jake...this is low and petty even for someone of your ilk. Remember Jake its better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

All the other presidents were more concerned with optics than results.

And gee, I can remember the media’s fawning over Gorbachev when Reagan had summits with him. Does anyone here remember how Walter Cronkite and others portrayed Brezhnev during the meetings with Richard Nixon (likely not too different from what took place in the 1980s)?

CNN’s Jake Tapper Has Lost Nearly 1/3 of His Audience

Throughout all of May last year, CNN’s Jake Tapper averaged 1.091 million total viewers and 304,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age demo. So far, this year, through the 16th of May those numbers have cratered by nearly a third. Tapper’s demo viewers have sunk to an average of just 206,000, a -32 percent decline. His total viewers collapsed to just 785,000, a -28 percent fall.

And what did the old way get us? An evil dictator with nukes. Even the folks who play the Kissinger-Nixon school of "Realpolitik" are big on posturing.

Trump is trying to fix the problems one at a time. He cannot defuse the bomb with brute force without putting 8 million citizens of Seoul and U.S. troops stationed by in mortal peril. Making a deal with an evil dictator, and allowing him to continue to be an evil dictator for the time being does not mean approval of the evil, especially as there is no reasonably sane alternative to letting him continue being evil dictator for now.

Thinking the unthinkable out loud... how many lives of Americans and Iraqi Christians would have been saved if Bush/Clinton/Bush had sat down with and cut deals with Saddam Hussein? We live in a crappy world ruled by crappy people. Good for Trump dealing with the world as it is rather than as Jake Tapper would like it to be.

But that’s “different” of course. They must get tired every day with the mental gymnastics they have to play 24/7.

Past presidents did not do it. The reason is not material.

Trump got it done. Give him the credit.

I disagree. Obama, Clinton, Bush...they could NOT have done this. They didn’t have the drive, talent, skill or gravity to pull it off.

The fact that they didn’t do it is absolute proof that they couldn’t.
