After spiking anti-Trump cartoons, Post-Gazette fires cartoonist Rob Rogers

After weeks of struggling with his editors over unpublished anti-Trump cartoons, longtime Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers announced that he had been fired from the paper Thursday.

A series of six spiked cartoons in late May and early June led to Rogers' extended absence from the Post-Gazette's editorial page and launched him into the national spotlight, including the Washington Post and an interview on CNN . Overall, Columbia Journalism Review said 19 of Rogers's cartoons or pre-publication ideas were shot down or left unpublished since March; he posted several of the spiked cartoons on his own Twitter feed earlier in the month and submitted another, depicting President Trump praising North Korea's Kim Jong Un atop a pile of skulls.

Rob Rogers has been the leftist cartoonist for the local leftist political rag for a lot of years. It appears they have a new manager at the editorial pages and he's conservative and most likely has had enough of this liberal dipstick. Of course people are decrying 'Freedom of the press!!'. Why can't a paper change it's editorial direction? Oh, that's right. They can as long as they go left.

LOL, the Union Scum Leader is coming to his defense.

Made me think of the line from Jurassic Park: "...the only one I’ve got on my side is the blood-sucking lawyer union representative!"

It’s a “free press”, which actually means the publisher and the editors are “independent” but the staff working under the editors do what the editors want. It - want gets printed - is really a management decision, not the staff’s, just like any other private business. It seems clear the cartoonist and the editors had irreconcilable differences.

The PG still spills ink on paper. Obsolete.

Okay...post the cartoons on YouTube and Facebook, let those algorithms push the message to the top of the search.

Let’s see if the message sells. Samantha Bee has a lot of open space on her site.

My guess is the Pittsburgh Pravda is losing money so fast that they had to start firing people. Either that or someone finally figured out that Rob Rogers cant draw a straight line with a ruler. Half the time his ‘Cartoons” look like they were drawn durning a Earthquake by someone having a seizure.

"I barely recognize this place anymore. Rob was a talented, wonderful colleague whose only transgression was he did his job," Fuoco wrote. "What has happened to the marketplace of ideas we are supposed to provide?"

"What happened to the marketplace..."? Really? Are you that damn stupid? First, your "ideas" are to bash Trump and you've been stuck on that one idea for almost 2 years. People are tired of it. Second, my guess is that the paper finally realized that people like Trump and are PO'ed by the MSM's relentless trashing of him. As a result, subscribers are dropping out since there's little reason to pay for something you don't like.

There...does that help you understand what happened, you Neanderthal.

Pittsburgh’s Lefty Mayor Bill Peduto decries this as “a grave threat to Freedom of the Press”.

Apparently that is defined as “the freedom to flip the bird to your boss”.

Would the Mayor tolerate that from a member of his staff?
I doubt it.

Our local paper here in western CO doesn’t have a resident cartoonist but nevertheless manages to show a anti-Trump cartoon on the editorial/commentary page almost daily. This to go along with a column from a NY Times writer like David Brooks or the WAPO Kathleen Parker ... all Trump bashing screeds of course.

Additionally, they are not supposed to “provide ideas” they are supposed to report the news. Who, What Where, When. We’ll figure out the why ourselves.

If we want fake news (provided ideas) we’ll watch tv.
