A case for open borders and how it can boost the world economy

In 2015, in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, Bernie Sanders infamously insisted that open borders is “a Koch Brothers proposal,” and free immigration is a “right-wing proposal, which essentially says that there is no United States.” Vox’s Ezra Klein, Bernie’s interviewer, quite correctly observed that open borders would “make the global poor richer.”

As philosopher Jason Brennan writes in “Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know,” “When economists estimate the welfare losses from immigration restrictions, they tend to conclude that eliminating immigration restrictions would double world GDP.” Sanders’ assertions of concern for the global poor ring awfully hollow given his unfortunate views on immigration.

Yet those views make sense if we consider his zero-sum idea of wealth-creation — the notion that one person getting richer necessarily means another getting poorer. This is an idea that economists disavowed centuries ago. In fact, contrary to Sanders’ bizarre, folk-economics, free trade and the free movement of people have made the entire world richer by orders of magnitude, the globe transformed by a positive-sum outpouring of wealth that was previously unimaginable.

SNIP

We don’t need the nation-state or its borders to have law and order. In fact, the fullest expressions of law and order are impossible while these remain in existence. National borders make the world poorer and more dangerous and lead to the kind of inhumanity taking place at the United States-Mexico border as we speak.

The people of the world should, wherever possible, ignore these borders, for their own benefit and that of the global economy. If doing so should have the effect of undermining the nation-state, then call that an added bonus.

Just another argument to distribute the wealth of the west... the ideas, the money, the achievements, thereby diluting the west and empowering the 57 states and Africa who could not develop the necessary infrastructure which built the achievements that the west enjoys.

Yep, just another attack on Western European Christian man and his descendants.

Screw them!

Same kind of nonsense thinking - some thug breaks a window in a business. That business has to purchase a new pane of glass, install it, and the glass company then manufactures a new pane of glass. Thinking that this creates positive economic activity. It doesn’t. Or think of all the economic activity after a major hurricane! Not.

This is what is rampant out there and what we hopefully bought eight years of being saved from by electing Trump.

My husband and I, however, think it is coming when Trump's time is up and it's good to prepare.

Wow that anyone could write this stuff and actually believe it. Or maybe he is just peddling it for his masters.

This is what the USSR sold - utopia. I talked to many Russians in the mid-90s who told me about the propaganda used to cram several families into tiny apartments and how GUM used to be a goodwill kind of place with long lines.

This is the scariest crap I have read in a long time. Even the USSR had nationalism and pride.

When people post this kind of drivel on the Media Comments section, I tell them that there are over seven billion people on planet Earth. I ask them to give me a number (a round one is acceptable) as to when they would tell these "newcomers' "Stop, our social systems cannot absorb any more of you. You have to go back.'

They never answer.

Just like mainland China. Make all the money you want don't think about freedom or you will regret it.

Open borders with government welfare is not libertarianism. Period.
