Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill suffered a broken rib after choking at a Senate lunch Thursday, where her Senate colleague Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, performed the Heimlich maneuver to save her.
The story was first reported by The Washington Post.
"She started choking. People cough, you think, well. And then started getting real red. 'I can't breathe, I can't breathe,' " Manchin said Monday. "I was big enough and tall enough to get some leverage on her and pick her up off her feet. I kept jerking and jerking and jerking until she said, 'You're hurting me now.' "
He continued: "I knew she could breathe then. I just go underneath her breastplate and give it all I had. ... We were all just so thankful. It was all so scary. You can't imagine."

A little higher and he could have broken her neck.
A broken rib is an acceptable outcome over a choking death. When I was trained on emergency first aid, males are frequently cautioned about it BUT are told that rib injuries are painful but not fatal.
Still, I’m glad he tried to help her. I don’t like either one of them politically, but I wish them no harm.

Heimlich done right usually shouldnt break ribs, but i suspect shes an older woman.
CPR done right, has good chance of cracking ribs.

I did this to a woman once. She was profoundly grateful.

EMS guy told me last week if you don’t crack the sternum when applying CPR you’re not doing it right.
Has she sued him yet for the broken rib?

I thought so.
It happens a lot. CPR can actually be dangerous, you can have ribs puncture stuff. People who have calcified ribs or bone weakening or cartilage issues could really be damaged.
Actually its more like breaking the sternum free from the rib cage....first compression usually sounds like crushing a bag of chips.
