I believe so yes. Although, I have no doubt there are many sincere catholics whose faith is very personal to them.
Collective cultural identity is a difficult phenomena to describe. Shared suffering can get people to rally under various banners.
Why? We've been told for decades now that zero population growth is a good thing - what happened to that? Yes, a welfare state requires a tax base, but these migrants aren't it and aren't going to become it. So why is migration such an existential need?
Ireland sucks. All the real Irish left a long time ago and come back to visit occasionally. It reminds them of why they left.
Still awash with sour, cranky haters. I was over there during the Dubya administration and caught a faceful of bile from an innkeeper. The entire island would fit inside California or Texas, and the entire population is less than the state of Maryland, so it's hard for them to imagine the scale of this country. She demanded that when I got back home, I should march on over to the White House and give George Bush a piece of her mind. "You tell him I said blahblahblah!"
Thank you for your astute summary. I’ve been trying to convince my Irish-American friends that things are not the way they sentimentalize about the Auld Sod. And George Soros has been spending a bundle in Ireland to create just this overtly disaffected state of affairs that you describe.
I think the Irish PM’s a communist.
I’ll take their Guinness and Jameson otherwise they can Póg mo thóin!
LOL!
