BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese imports took effect as a deadline passed on Friday, and with Beijing having vowed to respond immediately in kind, the world's two biggest economies took a high-stakes turn toward all-out trade conflict.
China's commerce ministry said in a statement shortly after the deadline passed that it was forced to retaliate, meaning $34 billion worth of imported U.S. goods including autos and agricultural products also faced 25 percent tariffs.
"China promised to not fire the first shot, but to defend national core interests and the interests of the people it has no choice but to strike back as necessary," the Commerce Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry called the U.S. actions "a violation of world trade rules" and said that it had "initiated the largest-scale trade war in economic history."
On Thursday, Trump warned that the United States may ultimately target over $500 billion worth of Chinese goods, or roughly the total amount that the United States imported from China last year.

Hey dude. Yeah I am in China. Zhuahi actually.
I am from Pennsylvania.
I’ve been living in China for 15 years now.
I am a Libertarian-Conservative.
Do not discount my points. I run an export company. I want to know what all this nonsense is all about in the American news. I have my workers try to find what all these tariffs are. No one friggin knows. The schedule has not been updated, no matter what the news out of CNN, MSNBC and Zero Hedge has to say.
Yeah, America has exported it’s industry. yeah, I get that. I was laid off numerous times while it was going on.
Yeah. America is great. I get that. Industry needs to return to America. Yeah. I get that as well.
But don’t you think it’s rather strange that there is a complete media blitz in regards to China now? Yet where is the hard data? Please give me a link to the revised tariff schedule. Please identify who are these unnamed sources, and text out of the secret documents.
It smells a lot like FAKE NEWS to me, dudes.
All I am asking for is a link to a break down of the new tariffs so that I can update my forecasts. Is that too much to ask for without being called a Commie apologist. Jeeze!
Sorry I was a bit too critical.
I lived in Beijing a long, long time ago. Speak the language a bit.
Remember it quite fondly.
That said, China really seems way out of line at the moment.
I agree, a large part of the problem is caused by American companies there, but China is too big, and is becoming far too powerful.
There seems inevitably, a very large adjustment very likely to happen between America and China.
Just my opinion.
Thank you. Now this is helpful.
Best Regards
One thing I can say about their variety show. They managed to have funny skits that weren’t in the least bit vulgar, more than can be said for anything nowadays and a lot of things back then.
Mexico can grow them faster and cheaper./s

That is true. Comedy has devolved into a hodge-podge of vulgarity, racism, bigotry and inane liberal political drivel.
Back in “the day” (showing my age) comedians like Carol Burnett, Red Skelton, Burns and Allen and others were very funny without a vulgar word anywhere. Jack Benny was a master of the deadpan pregnant pause. He could just stand there and be hilarious. It’s sad to have watched the death of comedy.
Hey! “:^)
Israel’s developing hydroponic apples. Just spit the seeds into a pot, water it, and two months later you have apple vines./just kidding.
Oh man, then they’ll own apples just like everything else...

Today apples! Tomorrow nectarines!
OK here’s a good start, just in case you haven’t found any link yet:
Article I got that link from:
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jul/07/trump-trade-war-china-us-products
Likewise, includes this link on the retaliatory tariffs by China:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/06/china-ready-to-fight-back-as-us-begins-trade-war
Once again, though. Here is the link of Chinese products, which appear to be targeted:
Regards.
Thank you. All of these links are helpful. However, as a matter of personal sanity, I pretty much note that most things out of the Guardian is nonsense.
After all, they created [1] the myth of child labor in China, the [2] myth of overworked Chinese workers jumping off roofs because they are overworked to exhaustion, and finally they are [3] promoting that idea that sex robots will replace women, and thus need to be banned. Ugh.
BTW... What has the UK got against Trump? There is a number of obvious connections between the attacks on him and the UK.
Anyways. Thanks very much for the links.
That’s always the problem when you ignore things like apples. You have to take immediate action or it spreads to other fruits.
Look at the Democrats.
I had to avert my eyes, but I saw a whole lot of bananas and kumquats.
