O'Rourke's Senate bid raises whopping $10.4M in second fundraising quarter

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) has reportedly raised more than $10.4 million over the past three months, placing him second among the top fundraisers this election season.

O’Rourke, who is challenging incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), told his followers in a video posted to Twitter that his campaign raised the enormous sum with 215,714 individual contributions.

The average donation was $33 over the past three months, he said.

“In the last three months, all of us together, without PACs [political action committees] or corporations, or special interests, have raised more than $10.4 million,” O’Rourke said. “That comes from 215,714 individual contributors, most of them from Texas, giving 15, 25, 50 bucks at a time.”

O’Rourke’s campaign already boasted massive fundraising, but the latest haul brings his cash-on-hand to $14 million, the Texas Tribune reported.

Cruz will reportedly announce raising $4 million over the same period of time, bringing him to $10 million in cash-on-hand, according to the Washington Examiner.

According to its latest report from March 31, the Center for Responsive Politics reported that 41 percent of O’Rourke’s contributions were small individual contributions of less than $200. Around 58 percent were from large individual contributions.

O’Rourke has said repeatedly that his campaign is not accepting PAC money. But, according to the Center, O'Rourke has taken in $35,265 for this election cycle.

"You have made something absolutely extraordinary happen in Texas," O'Rourke said, addressing his supporters. "Extraordinary because we can’t find many other Senate races that have raised this kind of money in a three-month period. We can’t find one in Texas — maybe ever — that has done this and to do it in this way, through small-dollar contributions — that's what democracy looks like."

Cruz has a slight lead over O’Rourke, with the latest polling showing the incumbent holding a 5-point lead over his Democratic challenger.

Cruz will win by 10 pts easily.

The Polls had Hillary winning the State as well.

No, Texas isn't going Blue, that is a DNC dream that is nowhere to coming true.

No one from El Paso has ever won a statewide election, and Beto's not going to be the first.

The elephant in the room nobody wants to talk about.

Tell them to drop it.

You stand up in a bar and make a comment that is guaranteed to start a brawl, then say, "Well, they started it!"

When? Where? Some other thread? Dude...

Don’t believe that “average” donation nonsense. It is so patronizing that they can publish statistics like that.

Where? I’ve been seeing it for two and a half years. I don’t know how you’ve missed it. It’s pervasive.

Is there anyone here besides the 2016 Cruz haters who think this guy will take Ted Cruz’s senate seat? Bueller? Bueller?

there is ZERO enthusiasm on the GOP side for Cruz, and his antics pushing Mike Lee for SCOTUS didn't help. He's got a real fight on his hands.

Have you noticed it is always the same bunch of clowns that tell us Beto has a chance? Some of them are closet democrats and some are fools....but I repeat myself.

I suspect Donald Trump (and many others) would personally relish seeing Cruz lose. However, post-Alabama, the President (and many others) knows losing this seat to a Dem isn't good on a number of levels. This will be reinforced during this Confirmation hearing which will be a cakewalk compared to that for RBG or any other liberal justice (even Sotomayor is reportedly not in perfect health).

Trump has pretty good instincts. My suspicion is he is letting all sorts of stupid Dem money flow in to Texas during the summer vs where it could probably help Dems more (i.e. VA). Once the campaign heats up, he will throw a few Tweets toward Cruz, say a few nice things and maybe even make a stop or two at Cruz rallies.

At that point Cruz' re-election is secured, millions of statist dollars are locked into a fruitless effort, we get a 54-46 R-D Senate followed by articles in Vox and Pollutico asking "how could Dems have been so stupid?"

You know what is telling? You have at least 3 comments already from folks who state they will vote Cruz, even though they do not like him........that is a pathetic unenthusiastic endorsement if I ever heard one. Cruz is not well liked......it is more of voting for him to keep the Dems out......weak support at best.

And your comments read like your trying to do your part to make him weaker.

And...? He could give that money out door to door and he still won’t come close to beating Cruz.
