SOUTH TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Two people were stabbed while stopping a robbery at a landmark in South Tucson Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The South Tucson Police Department said it happened around 1:30 p.m. at Mi Nidito Restaurant on South 4th Avenue.

Officers said Jerry Evans Madril, armed with a knife, entered the restaurant and demanded money.

Workers in the store were not intimidated and fought back.

"He was outnumbered with the knife," said Manny Olguin, a worker at Mi Nidito. "You could see it was a little box cutter. It wasn't a big machete or nothing."

This is our favorite restaurant in Tucson. It's in South Tucson in what some consider a sketchy neighborhood. I've never had any fear going there. They have some security guards outside. The Bubba has an item on the menu called the President's Plate. It's a sampling of some of their best dishes all on one plate. I've had the plate before, and I've sat where Bubba sat when he was there. lol. It's great food. Long waits unless you know when to go to get in quickly. We ate there enough that they would bring us a pitcher of tea as soon as we sat down. Wonderful family restaurant!

It’s the Menudo

Supposed to cure a hangover, but I always walked out with my mouth on fire and I still had the hangover...just wasn’t as important after that!

A box cutter is small, true. But one can bring you down if you’re not careful.

I’m from south florida. Pull a knife here and you have so much lead in you they’ll have to bury you in a toxic landfill

I’m sure there were folks inside that place carrying. They all showed great restraint. The owners are pretty easy going, happy, generous people. The customers are all like family. You wouldn’t shoot your stupid cousin in a crowded room.

Good thing this wasn’t Academy Sports or the employees would have had to follow the rules about touching customers/robbers. Academy prefers everyone die, instead.

Those parking lot guards at mi Nidito have been armed for decades. South Tucson has always been a danger zone.

Some of the Tucson Sonora Mexican restaurants are deadly, as you cannot stop eating until you pass out. Beyond delicious.

I went into one with a friend hoping for a “little lunch”, and ended up with plates stacked on our table, enough calories for several days. Weaponized gluttony.

"It wasn't a big machete or nothing!"

They probably have some big machetes in the back.

We went to a cookout tonight, and I told my daughter as we were driving away that I sure missed the food we had at cookouts in Tucson with our Mexican heritaged friends/families. We needed someone to spice up the steaks, chop ‘em up, and serve them with soft taco shells with some fresh pico de gallo on top. Alas, tonight’s cookout involved baked beans, mac n cheese, and potato salad all from a restaurant that isn’t very good. lol

Mi Nidito is by far my favorite Tucson restaurant. However, we ate at a lot of Sonoran restaurants and found something good at all of them. We also enjoyed La Parrilla, but it is a Mexico City styled restaurant. My favorite dish there is Crazy Shrimp. Yum!
