4,500 Tech Workers, 1 Mission: Get Democrats Elected
The New York Times ^ | 13 July 2018 | Kevin Roose and Sheera Frenkel

Posted on 07/13/2018 9:01:04 AM PDT by Theoria

It was four months and eight days until the 2018 midterm elections, and Anna Eskamani had not spent a penny to promote her political campaign online.

Ms. Eskamani, 27, is running to represent Florida’s 47th District in the State Legislature. Like many state-level candidates, she writes her own fund-raising emails and manages her own social media accounts. And with her busy schedule on the campaign trail, advertising online is an afterthought.

“My budget is zero for it right now,” Ms. Eskamani said. “It just hasn’t been necessary.”

One recent morning, Ms. Eskamani attended an hourlong phone conference with volunteers from a group called Tech for Campaigns, who hoped to change her mind.

Dozens of progressive groups are organizing for Democrats in this year’s midterms. But Tech for Campaigns has focused on a particularly challenging assignment: dragging Democratic campaigns into the digital age, before it is too late.

In a year and a half of existence, Tech for Campaigns has become a kind of Democratic Geek Squad — a national volunteer network consisting of more than 4,500 tech workers with day jobs at companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix and Airbnb. These volunteers, who include engineers, marketers and data scientists, are matched with Democratic campaigns across the country to provide training on digital skills, such as how to promote themselves on social media, build their email lists and use data analytics to identify potential donors.

There are no techies on our side? I find that hard to believe.

One man with a cell phone and a Twitter account can whump all 4,500 of those liberal IT workers. It’s all about having something worthwhile to communicate, not the means of communication.

Unsure. Maybe paid, conservs tend to be individuals. This is a group thing. Dems like groups.

Techies working so hard to elect the people who want to open the floodgates for the people who will replace them

“Volunteers”....really?

I suspect that this ‘movement’ is just a form of campaign finance fraud.

It should be the number one mission of Americans to keep the DemocRATS OUT of Washington. Screw the “tech workers”.

Agreed. This is likely anyone who would benefit from hiring H1Bs while firing all Americans from tech positions.

Reprehensible.

The tech forum Slashdot once did a poll of their posters on their political orientation. It was about 2/3 left and 1/3 right.

And at the forum at The Register (a high-tech news site), posters on the left and right downvote each others posts; and the ratio appears to be about the same.

For starters, they note that many of these are from Google, Facebook, etc where there are many who are democrat socialist as well as H1Bs.

Second, they use techie and STEM workers as if they are all tech, hands on tech employees. Betting that many of these are actually program managers, IT directors, IT HR and the many other areas of IT that have no real IT or STEM skills other than working in an IT company.

4500 is not that many. Many large companies by themselves have 2-5 times that number working in STEM/IT.

Long time techie and STEM person both in and out of the military. This is propaganda.

Been in front end design / user experience pretty much my entire career. Let's just say I keep my politics to myself...and I'm far more to the libertarian side of conservative than most people you'll meet here. To the overwhelming majority of my peers - who do express their political opinions publicly with no fear of "repercussions" - I would be considered a far right wing extremist.

The threat of more H1-B visas will shut them up.

I suspect many proggie techies believe they are better than, and know more than, average Joe Six-pack, and love having behind-the-scenes control of Joe and his clan via smart devices and their many apps.

So many of the EULAs for those apps allow wanton spying on and data collection from the users. But, a bulk of today’s users DO just run those fun apps with no privacy concerns, so I can’t blame the techies for that. But, the techies do know they’re Peeping Toms nonetheless.

These things bind the techies’ souls to Democrats.

The problem with leftists in all their forms and functions is simply that they exist at all.

I think some of the absolutely extreme confidence in Clinton “winning” was due to the fact that they had tech companies data mine, perform analytics, skew information, and birth millions of fake accounts. They also controlled electronic voting devices/systems. This in turn bolstered the media whose job was to influence and sway libtard voters and keep Trump voters home. I never get bored of the election night meltdown videos. The Trump re-election team needs to start now because the left will triple down on their last fraud.

The cheap labor lobby sold out American techs in favor of bringing over a million plus foreigners. The American ones that are left in the industry aren’t exactly feeling like anyone has their back.

I wonder if their employers know or even asked for volunteers/s. I bet they use their data bases or SERVERS to find those who would donate...

“companies like Google, Facebook, Netflix and Airbnb”

Seems that might be a bit illegal. Hey, NSA, FBI, get on it now!

MI, don’t bother. You have more important things to do.
