Yellowstone Volcano latest: 100-FOOT fissure sparks URGENT park closure

A 100-foot fissure has opened up in the Grand Teton National Park – not far from the potentially catastrophic Yellowstone volcano.

The giant crack in the Wyoming–based national park has prompted officials to shut down areas from tourists in case of landslides.

The Grand Teton National Park said in a statement: “The Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point areas are currently closed due to elevated potential for rockfall.

[...snip...]

If it was seismic activity beneath Grand Teton which caused the fissure, it could be a sign that Yellowstone is reawakening.

If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt an estimated 87,000 people would be killed immediately and two-thirds of the USA would immediately be made uninhabitable.

We’d probably hear it in Florida. Lava isn’t an issue with this volcano. The ejecta estimates range from 10^11 to 10^12 CM. Given the location; significant earthquakes and possibly other eruptions could be triggered throughout the country. It’s explosive index is 7-8:

https://sizes.com/units/volcanic_explosivity_index.htm

Krakatoa was a six; it ejected over 11 cubic miles of ejecta, was heard 3000 miles away and caused a 1.3C drop in global temperature:

I tell ya..we are screwed. Bend over and kiss yer ass goodbye.

Here is how Yellowstone will go. First a vent will open, how big? They dont know, but they guess the size of a VEI 4 or 5. Then, another opens, and another, and another. At that time the caldera wont be able to support the mass on top of it since enough material will have been blown out and the caldera collapses. At that time, it is a super eruption and we had all better have jelly in our pockets because we are all toast.

Will it happen? Yup, no doubt. When? Nobody knows. Yellowstone has had MANY smaller eruptions in the past as well-they dont even have a clue how large the next one will be.

Like most, I am sick and friggan tired of these freaks, like on youtube, saying its gonna blown soon. They had better hope like hell it doesnt blow because they will most likely die like he rest of us and what will all that harping got them.

The winter will last a decade if not more. Tambora was a vei 6 or 7 and that one really caused havoc across the globe.

The characteristics of the eruption have to do with the composition of the lava. Composition relates to viscosity.

The lower viscosity is Basalt like you see in Hawaii and generally just blurps out and runs off in rivers.

The high viscosity Andesite/Rhyolite explodes. Pompeii is one of the better known examples.

St Helens is middle of the scale and ‘80 was a tiny burp geologically speaking.

Wait a sec there. Krakatoa ejected 101 CM but Yellowstone could eject 1011 CM? TEN Orders of Magnitude more?

The volume of the entire earth is 260*109 CM. It would be quite a feat to eject the entire earth's volume and then some. Guess it would be like a balloon deflating.

Not to worry. Over the last 2.1 million years, the Yellowstone super volcano has only erupted every 630,000 years or so.

Anyone know how long it’s been since the last one? About 630,000 years.

Sleep well.

There’s an outhouse at the east entrance of yellowstone so foul, its destruction by a volcano would be a fitting end.
