WASHINGTON The government announced a $12 billion plan Tuesday to assist farmers who have been hurt by President Donald Trump's trade disputes with China and other trading partners.
The plan focuses on Midwest soybean producers and others targeted by retaliatory measures.
The Agriculture Department said the proposal would include direct assistance for farmers, purchases of excess crops and trade promotion activities aimed at building new export markets. Officials said the plan would not require congressional approval and would come through the Commodity Credit Corporation, a wing of the department that addresses agricultural prices.
"This is a short-term solution that will give President Trump and his administration the time to work on long-term trade deals," said Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. Officials said the direct payments could help producers of soybeans, which have been hit hard by the Trump tariffs, along with sorghum, corn, wheat, cotton, dairy and farmers raising hogs.

Yep - trying to keep from hurting the farmers and the WSJ calls it “buying votes”.....never heard them complain about the 24/7/365 Dem practices....
They sell most of their lobsters to Canada where, if you can believe it, it is canned - at least, that was how it was a year or two ago. Annoying. They should be selling it all to me!
What no fish farmers? How about the bee keepers? No cattlemen need to apply.
It is kinda funny though. I buy feed products that have not gone down a penny. Seems like if there were so much not being sold I would see it in my feed prices or maybe even in the market.
ANother handout to big business because the mom and pop farms are all but gone. A welfare program for the rich.
Why?
Agreed. So many here are rationalizing this in the name of “well they did it”.
Regardless of how good it might feel to twist the knife here, it’s still bad policy regardless.
Economic cluster blank.
There was a time not long ago when only US produced foods could be purchased with food stamps.
You could *not* purchase foreign produced food products.
Dollars to donuts that law was negated by the Wall Street globalists.
BBullshit. He’s caving to pressure ala Obama. Most of “farm subsidies” go to big business ag like ADM; they aren’t aren’t hurting, and this will money will be used to buy out and force out of business more family farms. There’s no damn difference between paying for new combines and paying for obama phones; it’s using the public treasury to benefit a sector of political supporters.
So is the general verdict here that tariffs are bad and this bailout of farmers is bad?
CBS This morning interviewed a farmer, he supports Trump an says this is just a short term fix until the deal gets done, BOOM, the media looked and found the farmers understood this and will work through it - media sadly disappointed.
Interesting.
Some counties I work with or had worked with are not on that map.
That surprises me a bit.
I am not for the subsidies. To little to to much, and it only prolongs the pain. This is mid term insurance.
Where is the source for the map if I may ask? I would love to look at the specifics. For instance, almost all of Iowa is green, yet mot of Nebraska is not (the counties that are green have pretty small population, and I bet I know a few of the farms).
“The only subset of farmers that I object giving money to are the corn farmers who help produce that lousy ethanol. Corn is food for people and animals. It is not fuel.Mandating ethanol is a Leftist hold-over that should die. “
You won’t find many Republican candidates in the Iowa caucuses arguing against money going to corn farmers.
You are so right. Get them out of the ethanol scam.
Excellent points.
Over the years I’ve taken a keen interest in issues surrounding questionable foods and ingredients. Soybean oil - in my honest opinion - is one of the worst things a person could put in their body.
Unless the farmers are exclusively growing these bio-fuels I would pray they find another crop to grow, the world needs other crops.
Monsanto is working to perfect these cheap nuggets and has come up with a few new lines of GMO soy. A big problem is soy has way too much Omega 6, which will cause chronic inflammation in the body which is the underlying cause of many diseases.
Soy oil increases weight gain when compared to other oils.
Soy oil sold as cooking or “vegetable oil” and the soy oil prevalent in so many processed foods is partially hydrogenated.
Because most commercial Soy is GMO and undergoing more and more Modifications it contains an extremely high level of Glyphosate.
There are other problems and questions about Soy, these are off the top of my head. If you’re truly interested do research and make up your mind about it.
It’s not a product I would feed to anyone I care about. Oils I use are Coconut, Grape Seed, Olive, Butter and Good Lard when I can find it OR I render it myself.
I have resulting health problems from a pituitary tumor, but neither my husband or I have the “normal” troubles of 60 year olds. We don’t need medication for chronic inflammatory diseases. I take turmeric daily for my aches and pains and it works :)
There is a lot of information out there about the Cons of Soy, and a lot of Industry-funded, Pro rebuttals. Unless it’s properly fermented (as in great Chinese Soy Sauce) I don’t have it.
Yes, that means most of our meals and snacks are cooked from scratch. My kitchen habits are probably very close to the 1880’s. :)
Since 1917:
The Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917, the Trade Act of 1974 and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 cover executive branch tariff powers.
Do you have a link for the map? I noticed the state of Va barely had any hi-lighted green areas and I know they have a lot of farms
You’ll probably frown, but I use bacon grease more than anything else. Othan that it is mostly canola or olive. I do like steaks in marinade and my favorite uses soy sauce and sesame oil
Not at all! Bacon grease is awesome :) Especially for onions and potatoes!
I save the fat from chicken, any pork, and duck when we have it. I use that in frying or sautéing, too.
Deep frying isn’t done much, but I like peanut oil. I’ll use Corn oil if I have to,
I don’t use Canola. It is another heavily processed GMO oil that started out as ship grease.
Here’s a website with more info about that. Sorry to bend your ear, this is a topic I care about :)
